Arshdeep Singh was the leading wicket-taker for India at the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 with 17 wickets.

In a significant development, India left-arm speedster Arshdeep Singh is in line to make his test debut for the Indian cricket team during the next Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia later this year, according to a report in Times Of India.

Arshdeep impressed everyone with his stunning performance with the ball in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. The Punjab speedster took 17 wickets in the tournament and was the leading wicket-taker for the Indian side. His crucial bowling performances helped the Men in Blue lift the T20 World Cup 2024 trophy.

Arhsdeep made his T20I and ODI debuts in 2022. The left-arm pacer has so far played six ODIs and 52 T20Is, picking 10 and 79 wickets respectively. The Punjab cricketer has also played 16 First-Class (FC) matches, in which he has scalped 49 wickets.

Indian selectors are keen to pick Arshdeep Singh for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy

In March, Cricket Australia (CA) confirmed the schedule for their home summer between September 2024 and January 2025.

For the first time since 1991-92, Australia and India will play five test matches in the series. The Border-Gavaskar Trophy will be played from November 22, 2024, to January 7, 2025.

According to a recent report in the Times of India (TOI), the BCCI selectors are keen on picking left-arm seamer Arshdeep for the test series Down Under. There are talks about his inclusion in the test squad for the upcoming marquee series against Australia.

“Arshdeep has moved the ball impressively in white-ball matches for India. He could be asked to play a few domestic red-ball games, starting with the Duleep Trophy on September 5, to enhance his chances of selection for the Australia tour. There’s a real chance that he could be India’s trump card, along with (Jasprit Bumrah, in Australia,” a source told TOI.

The TOI report further added that the selectors want to add another left-arm pace bowling option in the white-ball teams, and that’s why Khaleel Ahmed was included in the recent away Zimbabwe T20I series and upcoming white-ball tour of Sri Lanka.

“In fact, the selectors are keen on another left-arm pace option in the white-ball side at least, which is why Khaleel Ahmed toured Zimbabwe and has been picked for both the ODIs and T20Is in Sri Lanka,” the source added.
