Australia have continued their dominance over England with yet another commanding performance to retain the Ashes Urn. The Ashes 2025-26 came to an end on Thursday morning at the Sydney Cricket Ground with the hosts beating England by five wickets in the, while chasing 160 runs to win.
The series began with the hosts registering successive wins by eight-wickets in the first two matches of the series in Perth and Brisbane. Australia, then retained the Urn as they won the Adelaide Test by 82 runs with Pat Cummins returning to the field. With this win, the hosts took an unassailable 3-0 lead going into the boxing-day Test match.
England, avoided a series whitewash when they won the fourth Test match in Melbourne by four wickets. English bowlers did well with the ball on a pitch which saw the game end in just two days. The final Test in Sydney saw the game last for all five days as the hosts maintained a vice-grip on the game despite Joe Root and Jacob Bethell’s batting brilliance.
Speaking after the game, Australian skipper Steve Smith said:
“It was nice to finish on a high note and we know the importance of every Test match in terms of WTC. It was a good game of Test cricket and it was a well-earned victory. The guys stood up in different scenarios and everyone did their job, we are proud of that.”
England skipper Ben Stokes said:
“It was a great game to get involved in, Test matches which go to the fifth day always add up drama. We could have played much better than what we did. We have a long time before we play our next series so we have a lot of time to reflect back so hopefully we can put the wrongs to right.”
