Ashes: List of all winners in history

England were the winners of the maiden edition of The Ashes in 1982/83.

The Ashes is among the most entertaining test series in international cricket, which enjoys wide popularity among fans. The test series between the England Cricket Team and the Australian Cricket Team is termed ‘The Ashes’, and the campaign has been taking place for more than a century.

The maiden edition of Ashes took place in 1882/83 in Australia, where England crushed the hosts (2-1) in a three-match series. Despite having a home advantage, Australia failed to outplay the England team.

After losing the opening game by nine wickets, England made a stunning comeback in the next two matches to steal a spectacular victory in the campaign.

Former Australian captain Don Bradman is the most successful batter in Ashes history, with 5028 runs in 37 games. England’s Jack Hobbs (3636 runs) and Australia’s Steve Smith (3520 runs) are next in the list.

Former Australian legendary spinner Shane Warne (195 wickets) is the most successful bowler in The Ashes history, followed by Aussie seamer Glenn McGrath (157 wickets) and former England pacer Stuart Broad (153 wickets).

Over the years, Australia have been more successful than England in the campaign, and also bagged a victory in The Ashes 2025-26. On that note, below is the list of the winners of The Ashes since 1882/83.
