"What Shreyas Iyer has done wrong"- Ravichandran Ashwin fumes at Ajit Agarkar & Co. for batter's snub from Asia Cup 2025 squad

Shreyas Iyer was expected to be picked in the Indian squad for Asia Cup 2025.

Former Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin was baffled at the selectors’ choice of not naming Shreyas Iyer in the Indian squad for Asia Cup 2025. He said the batter has done nothing wrong, questioning the selectors on his choice. 

The Indian squad for Asia Cup 2025 was announced on Tuesday (19th August) in Mumbai. Chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar and T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav addressed a press conference and unveiled the 15-member squad. 

One of the notable omissions from the squad was of Shreyas Iyer. The right-hander was expected to be part of the Indian team for the tournament because of what he has done with the bat in all forms of the game. 

Shreyas Iyer, who was the leading run-getter for India in ICC Champions Trophy 2025, had a sensational time in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. Leading the Punjab Kings, he finished as the highest run-getter for his team, slamming 604 runs in 17 innings.

With Shreyas Iyer not getting picked in the Indian squad, Ravichandran Ashwin lashed out at the selectors, highlighting how the batter has nothing wrong. The former Indian off-spinner said that he’s gutted with Iyer not getting selected as he had even worked on his short ball game as well. Speaking in a video posted on his YouTube channel, he said: 

“Shreyas Iyer has solid credentials. He was out of the team, but he made you win the Champions Trophy. If you argue that Shubman Gill is in blasting form, then Shreyas is also in some fine form. Who will answer all these questions? What Shreyas has done wrong. 

“He did brilliantly well for KKR, made them win. He was sent into the auction. He then took Punjab to the finals for the first time since 2014. He overcame the short ball problem. He was hitting the likes of Kagiso Rabada and Jasprit Bumrah with ease in the IPL. I am just extremely sad for him and Yashasvi Jaiswal; it is extremely unfair.”

Shreyas Iyer was not even picked in the reserves for Asia Cup 2025. When Agarkar was asked about the same, he didn’t shy away from saying that there was no space for him in the team.
