Rahul Dravid’s tenure as India’s head coach came to an end with the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

Rahul Dravid’s animated celebration with the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 trophy stunned everyone, and senior off-spinner R Ashwin picked that brief moment as his favorite moment from that historic day in Barbados last month.

Led by Rohit Sharma, India ended their ICC trophy drought of 11 years by defeating South Africa in the final of this year’s T20 World Cup. Virat Kohli bagged the Man of the Match award for his knock of 76 runs, as India won by only seven runs.

During the trophy celebration, Dravid was given the trophy by the players and he let out all of his energy. Holding the trophy with both his hands, the India head coach screamed wildly for a few seconds before going back to his calm demeanour.

Dravid is not someone who expresses himself much in public, but seeing such emotions told the story of his own wait for a World Cup title.

I saw Rahul Dravid enjoy: R Ashwin

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin picked Dravid’s trophy celebration as his favorite moment from the final. The off-spinner said Dravid’s reactions touched him.

Ashwin said, “My moment was when Virat Kohli called Rahul Dravid and gave him the trophy. I saw him hug the cup and cry. Rahul Dravid screamed and cried. I saw him enjoy. I felt that a lot.”

17 years ago, also in the West Indies, India had suffered an embarrassing group-stage exit in the 2007 ODI World Cup under Dravid’s captaincy. So was this the redemption for Dravid? He doesn’t concur.

“There is no redemption. I’m not one of those guys who think about redemption and those kind of things. As a player, I was not lucky enough to win a trophy. But I tried my best, I gave my best whenever I played and it wasn’t to be, and that happens, it’s part of sport,” Dravid said.

“There are a lot of other players I know who have not been able to win a trophy. I was lucky to be given the opportunity to coach a team and I was lucky that this bunch of boys made it possible for me to win this trophy,” he added.

Dravid’s tenure as India head coach came to an end after India’s ICC T20 World Cup 2024 triumph as he didn’t re-apply for the position, which is now held by Gautam Gambhir.
