England have batted brilliantly in the first innings of the fifth AUS vs ENG Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground in Sydney.
For the first time ever in the series England have looked settled as they are at the front in the ongoing last game of the Ashes 2025-26 against Australia. The match commenced on Sunday, January 4, at the Sydney Cricket Ground in Sydney.
After opting to bat, England had a pretty poor start as they lost three wickets and were left reeling at 57 for three. However, what unfolded after that was the magical as Joe Root and Harry Brook bailed the team out of trouble with their flawless partnership.
Both added 169 runs for the fourth wicket before Brook fell for 84. However, Root was the master at work and notched up his 41st Test ton in the longest format of the game, his second in the series. The right-hander carried on and smacked a daddy hundred.
Root, with his 160, was supported by Jamie Smith (46) and Will Jacks (27) as England posted a total of 384 runs in the first innings. In response, Australian openers in Travis Head and Jake Weatherald came out all guns blazing with bat.
They added 57 runs inside 13 overs and after Weatherald perished for 21, Head took charge and in his usual aggressive way, he took England bowlers to cleaners and hit a brutal fifty, becoming the first batter to go past 500 runs in Ashes 2025-26.
Head remained unbeaten at 90, while Marnus Labuschagne (48) supported him well as the duo added 105 runs for the second wicket. The latter lost his wicket in the last hour as Australia ended day two at 166 for two.
