Top 5 lowest totals by Australia against India in test cricket

Australia have been bowled out under 100 three times against India in test cricket.

The Australian cricket team is the most successful team in test cricket history. Throughout their cricketing journey, while the Aussies have been dominating at home, they have also registered several memorable away test victories.

Their rivalry with India has been one of the most fierce and tightly contested ones. Australian batsmen have played a huge role in establishing their dominance against the Asian giants. However, cricket is as much about brilliant batting as it is about fiery bowling spells.

Despite their batting prowess, there have been instances where the Australian batting line-up has crumbled under pressure against the Indian bowlers.

On that note, let’s take a look at Australia’s five lowest totals against India in test cricket.

Five lowest totals by Australia against India in test cricket

5. 107 runs – Delhi, 1969 & Sydney, 1947

The third test of Australia’s tour of India in 1969, in Delhi, saw a stunning batting collapse by the Aussies. Australia started their second innings in a commanding position with a lead of 73 runs. Cruising towards a mammoth second-innings score, Australia slipped from 61/3 to 107/10. Indian spin twins Bishan Bedi and Erapalli Prasanna combined for all ten wickets. In response, India comfortably chased down the target of 181 runs on the final day.

Previously, India delivered a remarkable performance in the second innings of the Sydney test in 1947. Batting first in a rain-affected game, India managed only 188 in the first innings. In reply, Vijay Hazare (4/29) led the Indian bowling lineup and bowled out Australia for just 107 runs. The game ended in a draw with India finishing at 61/7 in their second innings.

4. 104 runs – Perth, 2024

The Perth test in the 2024/25 series saw bowling performances from both teams’ attacks as both sides were knocked out in the first four sessions of the match. India, batting first, were bowled out for 150 runs.

However, Jasprit Bumrah led a stunning fightback as his five-for helped India bundle the hosts for only 104 runs, taking a 46-run crucial lead.

3. 93 runs, Wankhede, 2004

Regarded as one of the most iconic matches in the history of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, the third test of the 2004 series at Wankhede saw the Indian team create history. Being 0-2 down in the three-match series, India were on the brink of a humiliating whitewash at home.

Defending a small target of 107 runs in the fourth innings, the Indian spin duo of Harbhajan Singh and Murali Kartik dismantled the Aussie batting lineup, sharing eight wickets between them. India bowled out Australia for 93 runs to register a thrilling 13-run win.

2. 91 runs, Nagpur, 2023

Australia’s second-lowest total against India in test cricket came in the opening match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023 in Nagpur. After conceding a massive 223-run lead in the first innings, the Australian lineup crumbled against the Indian spinners.

Ravichandran Ashwin led India’s charge, claiming an impressive five-wicket hall including the key wickets of Usman Khawaja and Peter Handscomb. Ravindra Jadeja was named Player of the Match for his seven wickets and 70 runs in the game.

1. 83 runs, Melbourne, 1981

Australia’s lowest total against India in test cricket came in the third test of India’s tour of Australia 1981, in Melbourne. Chasing the small target of 143 runs Australia were blown away by Kapil Dev’s brilliance who registered bowling figures of 5/28 in 17 overs.

Doug Walters stood out as the top scorer for Australia in a sorry-looking scorecard, contributing with 18 runs. The victory helped India in drawing the three-match series 1-1.
