Australia reveal masterplan to dominate India in Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2025-27
Australia will tour India for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2025-27 in January-March 2027.
The Border-Gavaskar Trophy is one of the most prestigious series in the history of Test cricket. It has been played since 1996-97. India have dominated their opposition, but Australia have managed to win the most recent series at home.
Now, the next BGT series is all set to be played on Indian soil. As per the schedule, Australia are set to tour India for a five-match test series between January and March 2027. This will be a crucial test not only for India but also for Australia.
The series can be make-or-break for the chances of qualifying for the final of the ongoing World Test Championship 2025-27. However, Australia are keen to stick with their formula of not playing warm-up games ahead of the series.
Australia to skip any practice match ahead of the BGT 2027
The current No. 1-ranked Test side has started planning for one of the biggest Test series. They will travel to India in January for the BGT 2025-27. This will be the first time since 1979 that Australia will play a five-match Test series on Indian soil.
Notably, Australia will have only 12 days between the conclusion of the three-match home Test series against New Zealand and the start of the BGT 2025-27.
Hence, they have decided not to play any warm-up matches and to prepare in conditions similar to Indian pitches.
In a recent interaction with cricket.com.au, head coach Andrew McDonald said, “We feel as though we’ve got enough time to immerse ourselves in those conditions. We won’t be taking on a practice game. It’ll just be more around the location.”
Notably, under his coaching, Australia have not featured in any warm-up game in their last two Test series in the subcontinent, including one in India during BGT 2022-23. McDonald spoke about the options available to players to adapt to the conditions.
He said, “We have gone to the UAE previously and we have also gone into India last time into Bangalore, so we’re just working through what that would look like in terms of how we then manage the individuals.”
Notably, before the much-awaited BGT 2025-27, Australia will play a Test series against Bangladesh (2 tests), South Africa (3 tests), and New Zealand (4 tests).
However, the head coach indicated that the squad for the BGT will be different from the squad for the home test series against New Zealand.
McDonald admitted that they want the players to train according to certain conditions and pitches in India. He added, “Ultimately, if you can have a dedicated venue that you’re able to use and replicate as close to the conditions as possible. You can match those locations – you want a connection in terms of conditions and climate. We believe we’ll get that right in terms of where we go; it just hasn’t been confirmed yet.”

The BGT 2025-27 is all set to begin on January 21 in Nagpur.
