Sri Lanka completed a historic run-chase to hand Australia their second consecutive T20 World Cup 2026 defeat.

Australia’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign suffered a massive blow after a crushing eight-wicket defeat to Sri Lanka in Pallekele, leaving the 2021 champions on the brink of a group-stage exit. After a superb start to their batting innings, led by half-centuries from openers Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head, the Australians collapsed dramatically in the death overs.

In a phase usually dominated by batters, Australia completely lost control, collapsing in the death overs by losing six wickets in the final four overs and managing fewer than 30 runs during that period.

However, the match spinned in favor of the home team due to Pathum Nissanka’s sensational innings, as he struck a brilliant 52-ball century to anchor Sri Lanka’s chase. Supported well by Kusal Mendis and Pavan Rathnayake, Nissanka ensured there were no nervous moments, as Sri Lanka overhauled the total with 12 balls to spare and sealed their third consecutive win in Group B.

Following this result, Sri Lanka have qualified for the Super 8, leaving the Aussies on the brink of elimination.

Australia still have one match to go, against Oman on February 20. However, with their latest loss, they are placed third in their group with just two points, below both Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe. Australia no longer find their qualification hopes in their own hands, as they are now reliant on a few results to go their way.

  • Australia’s fate now depends on the fixture between Ireland and Zimbabwe. If Zimbabwe win, they move to 6 points. As a result, Australia will be knocked out.
  • If Ireland win, Australia will then have to once again hope Zimbabwe loses to hosts Sri Lanka.
  • If Zimbabwe lose both their matches, only then will Australia stand a chance to reach the Super 8. They will have to win with a decent margin against Oman, to surpass Zimbabwe on Net Run Rate.

Are Australia eliminated from the T20 World Cup 2026?

No. Australia still have one group match left but their qualification is no longer in their own hands.

What does Australia need to qualify for the Super 8?

They must beat Oman convincingly and hope Zimbabwe lose both remaining matches, allowing Australia to edge ahead on net run rate.
