The Rashid Khan-led Afghanistan thumped Australia by 21 runs in their Super 8 clash.

Afghanistan recorded their first-ever victory over Australia in international cricket on Saturday night in St Vincent during their Super 8 match of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. This result has thrown open Group 1 where now even India and Australia are not assured of a semi-final berth.

Rashid Khan said that it is a “great feeling” to beat world champions Australia. Rashid alluded to the last two ICC events when Afghanistan came close to upstaging the Aussies but failed to hold their nerves at crucial junctures.

On Saturday, though, at the Arnos Vale Ground, Afghanistan bowled Australia out for 127 while defending their total of 148. They overcame Glenn Maxwell’s half-century as the batter threatened for a deja vu of last year’s epic double century at the Wankhede.

It’s something we missed in last two years: Rashid Khan

Rashid Khan said that this victory over one of Australia’s finest-ever teams was a huge win for their team and their country.

“It’s a massive win for us as a team and as a nation. In the World Cup, beating champions is a great feeling. It’s something we missed in last two years – in 2023 World Cup and also in 2022 in Australia where we lacked some runs,” the Afghanistan skipper said.

“It is so much important for people at home and for everyone all over the world where Afghans are there. They were badly missing this win. I am sure they would be proud of this and would have enjoyed the game. It is just the beginning for us, big game next and we have all the chances of making the semis.”

This loss for Mitchell Marsh’s team means that there next game against India is a virtual must-win match because Afghanistan will be playing Bangladesh after the IND vs AUS clash. The AFG vs BAN match is also at St Vincent, where Rashid’s side have a better idea of the conditions and pitch.
