Australia have rested regular captain Pat Cummins for the ODI series against England.

On July 15, 2024, Cricket Australia (CA) named young ODI and T20I squads for the upcoming tour of England and Scotland in September 2024. All-rounder Mitchell Marsh has been named as captain of the Australian side for both of the series.

After performing well in Australia’s T20 domestic cricket for the past two seasons, 20-year-old Cooper Connolly earned his maiden call-up to the national side. The youngster will travel with the T20I squad for the UK tour.

Star batter Jake Fraser-McGurk has been added to both squads for the upcoming white-ball tour of UK. McGurk will look to cement the opener’s slot, a void left by veteran batter David Warner, who retired from international cricket after the conclusion of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in June.

Surprisingly, ODI World Cup 2023-winning skipper Pat Cummins has been rested in order to manage his workload. It is understood that the CA wants Cummins to be fresh and fit ahead of the crucial five-match home test series against India later this year.

Ace speedster Mitchell Marsh and all-rounder Glenn Maxwell have been excluded from the T20I squad for the England and Scotland series. However, both cricketers will join the team for the five-match ODI series against the same opposition.

This tour gives a great opportunity to bring new players: National men’s selector George Bailey

Australia’s national men’s selector, George Bailey, while announcing the squad, said that this upcoming tour will help them bring in new players in the absence of David Warner and Matthew Wade.

“This tour gives us a great opportunity to bring in some new players in the absence of David Warner and Matthew Wade, as well as giving some senior players time to prepare for the home summer and a busy first half of next year,” Bailey said in a statement.

Bailey opened up they are very pleased with young Cooper for what he has done in the past 12 months. “We are particularly pleased to offer Cooper his first opportunity in the T20 squad having introduced the likes of Jake (Fraser-McGurk), Spencer (Johnson), Xavier (Bartlett) and Aaron (Hardie) in the past 12 months.

“They are exciting prospects to join the likes of Cameron Green, Nathan Ellis and Josh Inglis in the white-ball setup,” Bailey concluded.
