Australia will face Namibia and West Indies in their two warm-up matches of ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

The Mitchell Marsh-led Australia will face player shortage in their two warm-up games of ICC T20 World Cup 2024. The Aussie cricketers who were involved in the just concluded Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 have been given a mini-break at home before they head to Caribbean Islands and the USA for the upcoming ICC tournament.

The 2021 T20 world champions are scheduled to play two warm-ups. They will first play Namibia on May 29 and then the co-hosts West Indies on May 31. However, with a shortage of players, the Marsh-led side will be forced to use support staff as substitute fielders.

Australian cricketers Pat Cummins, Travis Head, and Mitchell Starc were involved in the IPL 2024 final on May 26 and will head back to their home country before joining the T20 World Cup 2024 squad next month.

Meanwhile, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) players Glenn Maxwell and Cameron Green, who played in the playoffs in IPL 2024, are also having mini-breaks at home.

All five cricketers will link up with the Australian World Cup squad ahead of their first group match against Oman on June 5. Star all-rounder Marcus Stoinis is also yet to arrive in the Caribbean Islands for the upcoming global event. It means that the 2021 champions will have just nine players for their warm-up games.

It’s important to be flexible: Mitchell Marsh

Australian T20I skipper Mitchell Marsh confirmed that some players who have been part of the IPL 2024 are given a break at home.

“It’s important to be flexible. Guys have been at the IPL. They’ve been playing a lot of cricket so we’ve prioritized giving them a couple of days at home, see their family, refresh and play the long game for this tournament. We’ll get to our 15 eventually but it’s really important that we give them a break, even if it’s [just] a couple of days at home,” Australian skipper Mitchell Marsh told cricket.com.au.

Australia’s warm-up fixtures

May 29: v Namibia, Queen’s Park Oval, Trinidad & Tobago, 9am AEST

May 31: v West Indies, Queen’s Park Oval, Trinidad & Tobago, 9am AEST
