Will Australia’s win in second AUS vs BAN Test hamper India’s chances in ICC WTC 2025-27?

The ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 is slowly moving towards an important stage, with teams fighting for a place in the final at The Oval in June 2027. Australia, South Africa and New Zealand are currently among the top teams, while India are also trying to improve their position with consistent performances.

India recently moved to 53.33 points percentage after they defeated Sri Lanka in Galle. They have played 10 matches, winning five, losing four and drawing one. India are currently fifth in the WTC table and have seven Tests remaining in their campaign.

Meanwhile, Australia were also looking to improve their position after suffering a nine-wicket defeat against Bangladesh in the first Test in Darwin. The defending WTC champions needed a strong performance in the second Test in Mackay.

Australia played exceptional cricket in the second Test as they defeated Bangladesh by an innings and 51 runs in the second Test. The result levelled the two-match series 1-1, and this pushed Australia again into a strong position.

Australia showed great cricketing skills in Mackay after their surprise defeat in Darwin. Bangladesh were bowled out for only 64 in their first innings, with Mitchell Starc bowling a brilliant spell of 6/12.

Australia then made 210 in their first innings. Cameron Green was the leading run-scorer as he made 67 runs with the bat. Nathan Lyon played an important late cameo with an unbeaten 32.

Bangladesh needed a much better batting performance in the second innings but again struggled against Australia’s bowling attack. They were eventually bowled out at 95, handing Australia an innings and 51-run victory.

Australia’s win strengthen their position in the WTC table, but it does not directly affect India’s WTC qualification chances. Moreover, India recently won against Sri Lanka, and if they win second Test as well, they will move close to final.

Australia gaining a win means they look favourites to qualify for WTC 2025-27 final. However, Australia’s current win makes the upcoming India-Australia series even more interesting. The two teams are scheduled to play five Tests in India next year, and that series is likely to decide the fate of two finalists for WTC.

Australia’s win might affect India in the long term, but if they can win a large part of that series, India can collect crucial points and improve their PCT.

Can India still qualify for the WTC final?

India can still qualify for the WTC 2025-27 final. The team has seven Tests remaining and plenty of points still available.

What is Australia’s position in the WTC 2025-27 points table?

Australia are currently top of the WTC 2025-27 standings in the points table, with 96 points and a PCT of 80.00%.
