List of all Australian batsmen to score 10,000+ runs in test cricket

Only three Australian batsmen have scored over 10,000 runs in test cricket so far.
Australia stand as the most successful team in the history of test cricket. Australian legacy in the longest format of the game includes eight ICC test maces between 2003 to 2020 and winning the ICC World Test Championship final in 2023.
Over the years, Australia have produced some of world’s best players. Australian batsmen have played a key role in posting big totals across different conditions around the globe.
Despite playing most of their games on bouncy pitches of Australia, a few of the Aussie batters have etched their names in history by amassing more than 10,000 runs in their test careers.
On that note, let’s take a look at the Australian batsmen who have crossed the 10,000-run mark in the oldest format of the game.
1. Allan Border – 11,174 runs
Former Australian captain, Allan Border is considered as one of the greatest batters of his era. Primarily batting at No. 4, Border was the first ever Australian batsman to score 10,000+ runs in test cricket. He amassed 11,174 in 156 tests at an average of 50.56. His impressive tally includes 27 centuries and 63 half centuries.
Border is hailed for transforming the Australian team into a cricketing powerhouse. He led Australia to their first ICC Cricket World Cup trophy in 1987.
2. Steve Waugh – 10,927 runs
One of Australia’s most successful captains, Steve Waugh was the second from his country to score over 10,000 runs in the longest format of the game. He is Australia’s third-highest run-scorer in test cricket. In 168 tests, Waugh scored 10,927 runs at an stunning average of 51.00, including 32 hundreds and 50 half-centuries.
What makes Waugh special is the fact that he achieved this incredible milestone while batting majorly in the middle order, at No. 5 and No. 6. His Australian side of the late 90s and early 2000s is regarded among the greatest ever test teams.
3. Ricky Ponting – 13,378 runs
Australia’s one of the greats Ricky Ponting was the third Australian batter to breach the 10000-run mark in test cricket. Ponting finished his career as the highest run-scorer for his nation with 13,378 runs in his test career at an excellent average of 51.85. The Tasmanian batsman was at peak of his powers during the early 2000s.
He also holds the record of scoring most test centuries by an Australian batter with his tally of 41. Ponting retired from test cricket in 2012 playing his last test against South Africa at Perth.
4. Steve Smith – 10000* runs
Australia’s modern-day great Steve Smith is latest entrant in this list of Australian batters to score 10,000 or more runs in test cricket. Starting his career as a leg-spinner, Smith went on to become one of the greats of the game with the bat.
Steve Smith breached the 10000-run mark on January 29, 2025 against Sri Lanka at Galle. Smith also has second-most centuries (34) for Australia in test cricket.
