Ranji Trophy is India’s first-class tournament, which observes four-day games between states and city-based teams annually. A total of 38 teams- at least one from each of the 28 states and 8 union territories- take part in the Ranji Trophy currently.
The tournament witnessed its maiden edition in 1934, when Bombay (now Mumbai) won the title by crushing Northern India in the final at Bombay Gymkhana in Mumbai. With 42 titles over the years, Mumbai are also the most successful team in the tournament’s history.
Unlike Mumbai, there are also a few teams that have not won the tournament for a long time. For instance, Jammu & Kashmir won their maiden edition in 2025-26, defeating Karnataka in the final. The Parag Dogra-led side scripted history and stunned the entire Indian cricket fraternity with their impeccable performance.
Opting to bat first in the summit clash, Jammu posted a mammoth total of 584 runs in the first innings, with superb teamwork by multiple batters. While Shubham Pundir slammed a century, Yawer Hassan, Paras Dogra, Abdul Samad, Kanhaiya Wadhawan, and Sahil Lotra hammered half-centuries.
With Auqib Nabi’s five-wicket haul, they bowled out Karnataka for 293 runs with opener Mayank Agarwal (160) being the lone warrior.
With centuries by Qamran Iqbal (160*) and Sahil Lotra (101*), J & K piled up 342/4d in the second innings to claim a victory and script their name in the record books.
