S Badrinath noted that Yashasvi Jaiswal has done better than Shubman Gill in T20I cricket.
Former Indian cricketer Subramaniam Badrinath has questioned Shubman Gill’s spot in India squad for Asia Cup 2025. He also pointed out that Yashasvi Jaiswal has a better record in T20I cricket than Gill.
After returning to India’s T20I squad after more than a year, Gill also has been named as India’s vice-captain for Asia Cup 2025. The right-handed batsman is expected to open the batting with Abhishek Sharma in the tournament. However, Yashasvi Jaiswal’s snub from Asia Cup 2025 squad was a big surprise for many cricket fans.
Notably, Jaiswal has been picked as one of the standby players for the tournament. Speaking on Jaiswal’s snub, India chief selector Ajit Agarkar had said that they could only pick one opener among Abhishek and Jaiswal. Since Abhishek can also bowl, he was given preference.

Yashasvi Jaiswal has done even better than Shubman Gill: S Badrinath
While speaking on his YouTube channel, former India and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) middle-order batsman S Badrinath noted that Jaiswal has a better record than Gill in T20I cricket. He also questioned why Gill was picked over Sai Sudharsan despite the latter scoring more runs in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025.
“I see this mostly as a positive that they are backing a youngster and projecting him for the future. But what about Yashasvi Jaiswal? He has done even better than Shubman Gill. Also, why has Sai Sudharsan missed out after scoring 700 runs in IPL 2025 and performing better than Shubman Gill? Sanju Samson himself is now in doubt to start in the playing 11,” he said.
“So while backing Shubman Gill, you ask what wrong have Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan done when their numbers are better than Gill’s. It’s not a bad decision but one that’s 50-50,” he further added.
Notably, Gujarat Titans (GT) opener Sai Sudharsan won the Orange Cap in IPL 2025 by finishing as the highest run-scorer with 759 runs. Gill, with 650 runs in 15 games, finished as the fourth highest run-scorer in the league.
Moreover, with Gill’s return to T20I side, Samson is highly likely to lose his opening slot. He and Abhishek Sharma opened for India in the recent past.
Meanwhile, Suryakumar Yadav will lead India in Asia Cup 2025. The defending champions will play their opening game against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on September 10. They are part of Group A alongside Pakistan, Oman, and the UAE.
