From Mashrafe Mortaza to Mustafizur Rahman - Bangladesh players’ performance in the IPL history
A total of seven Bangladesh players have played in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
In Indian Premier League’s (IPL) history, players from Bangladesh have graced the tournament with their presence. However, despite their earnest efforts and participation, the impact of Bangladeshi players in IPL has often fallen short of leaving a significant mark.
This aspect of their journey in the league has been marked by challenges and the struggles to make a substantial impact on the grand stage of IPL. Despite their commendable efforts, the tale of Bangladesh players in IPL unfolds as one where they have encountered hurdles in establishing a lasting and prominent presence in the tournament’s history.
Mustafizur Rahman’s outstanding performance in 2016 Indian Premier League (IPL) season with Sunrisers Hyderabad earned him the prestigious title of “Emerging Player of the Tournament.” Remarkably, he became the first overseas player to receive this esteemed award.
Now let’s look at Bangladesh players’ performance in IPL history.
1. Abdur Razzak :
Abdur Razzak, the skilled left-arm spinner, made a brief appearance in Indian Premier League (IPL) during the inaugural season in 2008 with Royal Challengers Bangalore. His IPL journey was limited to only one match, where he faced Rajasthan Royals. In that match, Razzak bowled two overs, and conceded 29 runs. Unfortunately, Royal Challengers Bangalore faced defeat in that match, and lost the match by 65 runs.
2. Mohammad Ashraful :
Mohammad Ashraful participated in Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2009, representing Mumbai Indians. However, his IPL journey was restricted to just one match against Delhi Daredevils. In that game, Ashraful faced 10 balls but managed to score only 2 runs. Unfortunately Mumbai Indians lost that match by 4 wickets.
3. Mashrafe Mortaza :
Mashrafe Mortaza’s stint with Kolkata Knight Riders in 2009 IPL made limited contributions, with just one appearance during the season. In that specific match, he bowled the most expensive spell of the tournament, He conceded 26 runs in that over, paving the way for Deccan Chargers to secure victory. His bowling figures for the match stood at 4 overs for 58 runs.
4. Tamim Iqbal :
Tamim Iqbal secured a spot with Pune Warriors India for 2012 season, yet unfortunately, he never had the chance to play. Subsequently, he did not attract further interest from any other franchise in the subsequent seasons.
5. Shakib Al Hasan :
Picked up by Kolkata Knight Riders in 2011, Shakib Al Hasan emerged as a key player in their two title-winning campaigns in 2012 and 2014. His composed contributions, particularly in the 2012 finals, played a pivotal role in Kolkata securing the championship. Recognized as a valuable all-rounder in T20 cricket, Shakib continued to make an impact when picked by Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 2018 IPL auction.
In the 2021 auction, he returned to his former team, KKR. Despite getting signed by Kolkata Knight Riders for IPL 2023, Shakib opted out of the tournament due to international commitments with Bangladesh national cricket team and personal reasons.
In his IPL career, Shakib has played 71 matches, scoring 793 runs with a highest score of 66*, averaging 19.83, and boasting a strike rate of 124.49, including two half-centuries to his credit. With the ball, he has taken 63 wickets, with his best figures being 3/17, maintaining an average of 29.19 and an economy rate of 7.44, including two half-centuries to his credit.
6. Mustafizur Rahman :
In February 2016, Mustafizur Rahman entered IPL scene when he was selected by Sunrisers Hyderabad during 2016 IPL auction. His impressive performances led to his retention by Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2017 IPL auction in December. Subsequently, in January 2018, Mumbai Indians acquired his services in 2018 IPL auction.
In February 2021, Rajasthan Royals secured Mustafizur Rahman him in that year’s IPL auction. Another notable development occurred in February 2022 when Delhi Capitals acquired him during the auction for 2022 IPL.
Mustafizur Rahman’s stellar 2016 IPL season with Sunrisers Hyderabad earned him the title of “Emerging Player of the Tournament,” making him the first overseas player to receive this prestigious award. Mustafizur has played 48 matches, claiming 47 wickets with the best figures of 3/16, averaging 30.72, and maintaining an economy rate of 7.93.
Mustafizur will be seen playing for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL 2024.
7. Litton Das :
In 2023 IPL season, Litton Das joined Kolkata Knight Riders but had a brief stint, featuring in just one match against Delhi Capitals where he scored only 4 runs. Unfortunately, Kolkata Knight Riders couldn’t clinch a victory, and Delhi Capitals won the match by 4 wickets. Notably, Litton Das had to depart from IPL due to personal reasons, specifically a family emergency, leading to his return to Bangladesh. Consequently, Johnson Charles replaced him in the squad. Litton was released by the franchise after the season.
