The Indian Premier League (IPL) auction took place on December 19, 2023, at the iconic Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai. It was the first time in the IPL’s history that a player auction took place outside of India.

Let’s dive straight in to discover the winners and losers of the IPL auction 2024, where some players broke records and others were surprisingly snubbed.

What happened at the Indian Premier League 2024 Auction?

We can start by taking a look at the winners, meaning which cricket players were the big-money movers and which lucky teams secured these new players.

  • Micthell Starc became the most expensive player at an IPL Auction, going to the Kolkata Knight Riders for a jaw-dropping Rs 24.75 crore, despite having been absent from the IPL for eight years
  • The Sunrisers Hyderabad ended up getting ODI World Cup winner Pat Cummins for just over Rs 20 crore
  • The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) outbid everyone late on and secured New Zealand all-rounder Daryl Mitchel for Rs 14 crore
  • Although Sameer Rizvi had a relatively low base price of Rs 50 lakh, a bidding war for the prolific batsman saw him eventually go to CSK for a total of Rs 8.4 crore
  • The other winners were the Rajasthan Royals, who, after a bidding war with the Delhi Capitals, ended up landing middle-order batsman Shubham Dubey for Rs 5.8 crore

Some of the 2024 IPL Auction’s biggest winners would have felt like they landed a jackpot win at a Casino Online after landing some of these big-named players. They have managed to strengthen their squads just in time for the upcoming IPL 2024 season.

Let’s now take a quick look at some of the losers from the latest IPL Auction who were unexpectedly left out.

  • Despite being a veteran of the IPL for over a decade, former Australian captain Steve Smith went unsold
  • The other player who nobody expected would go unsold was England leg-break bowler Adil Rashid
  • Although he was expected to go for a lot more, the Sunrisers Hyderabad managed to secure Sri Lanka all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga for a total of R2 1.5 crore after there was hardly any bidding competition
  • One of the best players at the ICC men’s 2023 Cricket World Cup was Rachin Ravindra. CSK managed to nab the all-rounder for a paltry auction fee of Rs 1.8 crore (much less than people thought he would have been sold for)
  • Initially unsold at the auction, spin option Mujeeb Ur Rahman eventually went to the Kolkata Knight Riders for Rs 2 crore

IPL 2024 schedule

Let’s take a quick look at a few facts about the upcoming IPL season. The official tournament name is the Indian Premier League 2024 and is run by the BCCI & IPL Governing Council.

A total of 10 teams will be competing this year and playing 72 matches across venues in India. The official start date for the first match, scheduled to take place in Chennai at the Chepauk Stadium, is April 1, 2024, in a match between the Gujarat Titans and the Chennai Super Kings.

The last game of the season is on June 2 and is scheduled to take place at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Who are the odds-on favourite to win the upcoming IPL 2024?

It’s still far too early to say who might win the IPL 2024 title. However, many of today’s most trusted online bookmakers seem to have the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Gujarat Titans (GT) and Mumbai Indians (MI) as the joint odds-on favourite team to win.

They are all currently priced at 5/1 in the fractional odds format, which is the same as +500 in American/moneyline odds and 6.00 in decimal odds. It also means that each team has a 16.70% implied probability rate of winning the IPL 2024 title outright.
