The attacking midfielder leaves the Indian Super League after a successful spell.
In a shocking turn of events for the fans of Mumbai City FC, the club and Greg Stewart have mutually parted ways. The 33-year-old returns to the Scottish Premiership to join Rangers, the club he left to come to the Indian Super League back in 2021.
Greg Stewart took the Indian Super League by storm during his spell for Jamshedpur FC, helping Owen Coyle’s men win the ISL League Winner’s Shield. Then, he joined and also guided Mumbai City FC to the ISL League Winner’s Shield and featured for the Islanders in the AFC Champions League.
A massive loss
Greg Stewart was in a league of his own and far better than the competition in the Indian Super League from his first appearance onwards. The attacker went on to make 46 overall appearances in the league, netting 21 goals and providing 21 assists.
Losing Greg Stewart in the middle of the 2023-24 campaign comes as a deep loss to Mumbai City FC and their fans who passionately adored the Scottish midfielder. The fans were still reeling from the loss of their former head coach Des Buckingham, who left the club to manage Oxford United in England.
Having said that, it will be interesting to see how Mumbai City FC act in the January transfer window. The winter transfer window presents a brilliant opportunity to the Islanders to look for a replacement without affecting their ISL campaign which is on a brief hold due to the ongoing 2024 Kalinga Super Cup.
As for Greg Stewart, returning to Scotland to be around his family and loved ones was a huge motivation behind ending his ties with Mumbai City FC. His last appearance for the Islanders, a 2-1 win over Mohun Bagan, saw him receive a red card, score a goal and provide an assist, truly summarising his entertaining stay in Indian football.
