Sachin Tendulkar has scored the most centuries at home in test cricket.

Scoring runs in test cricket is considered one of the most challenging tasks in cricket. Known for testing the patience and endurance of players, the longest format of the game gives bowlers the room to try different tactics without a constant fear of leaking runs as the red ball swings, seams, and turns more than the white ball.

While teams generally play better in home conditions, the weight of expectations also brings additional pressure on players to deliver match-winning performances in their own backyard. The rich history of test cricket has seen many excellent batsmen but there have been few players who have taken their performance to a completely different level when batting in their home country.

On that note, let’s look at the five batsmen who boast the highest test averages at home among those who have scored a minimum of 4000 runs.

Five batsmen with highest averages at home in test cricket (Min 4000 runs):

5. Michael Clarke – 62.05

Known for playing marathon knocks, former Australian captain Michael Clarke stands tall with an average of 62.05 on Australian soil in test cricket.

Clarke was one of the best test batters during his prime years. Named as Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 2010, Clarke scored 17 centuries and 13 half-centuries at home in test cricket.

Clarke’s highest individual score of 329* came in 2012 at Sydney where he destroyed the Indian bowling attack.

4. Mohammad Yousuf – 65.25

Mohammad Yousuf was a key figure in the Pakistani batting lineup during the 2000s. Yousuf scored 3067 runs in 52 innings in Pakistan with an outstanding average of 65.25. Yousuf also scored 12 hundreds and 11 half-centuries in test cricket at home.

One of Yousuf’s most memorable test innings came against England in 2005 at Lahore where he scored 225 and guided Pakistan to an innings win.

3. Gary Sobers – 66.80

Hailed as the greatest all-rounder of all time, Gary Sobers averaged 66.8 with the bat in the West Indies. Sobers played 75 innings and scored 4075 runs at home in a career that spanned over 20 years.

His highest individual score of 365* came against Pakistan in 1958 at Sabina Park.

2. Kane Williamson – 67.22

Modern-day great Kane Williamson is next on our list with his outstanding average of 67.22 in home tests. Well known for his compact defence, Williamson is one of the biggest match-winners for New Zealand at home.

He has scored 4840 runs in 82 innings in New Zealand with 19 hundreds and 20 half-centuries. One of his most memorable knocks is 121* in 2023 at Christchurch against Sri Lanka where he guided New Zealand to a last-ball win.

1. Sir Don Bradman – 98.22

Regarded as the greatest batsman in test cricket, Sir Don Bradman tops the list with an impressive average of 98.22 in Australia. What makes this average even more astonishing is the fact that this outstanding number is still less than what he averaged away from home!

Bradman’s legacy on Australian soil involves 18 hundreds and 10 half-centuries. His most remarkable knock of 299* at home came against South Africa in 1932 at Adelaide.
