Former New Zealand captain Kane Williamson is the only Black Caps player on the list. Williamson has 727 runs in the tournament, which he has racked up in a total of 27 innings.

The former Kiwis captain preferred playing it safe and provided stability in the line-up; thus, his average is a little less commendable by T20I standards (112.53).

9. Quinton de Kock: 757 runs

One of the only two active players on the list, Quinton de Kock, has scored the most runs for South Africa in the ICC T20 World Cup.

In 30 innings, the wicketkeeper-batter has accumulated 757 runs for the Proteas with a strike rate of 134. At the 2026 World Cup, which is expected to be his last campaign, De Kock has risen in the rankings.

8. Shakib Al Hasan: 853 runs

Former Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan will always be regarded as one of their greatest players of all time. He scored 853 runs in 43 appearances for Bangladesh, making him one of the most consistent players between 2007 and 2024.

7. Tillakaratne Dilshan: 897 runs

Tillakaratne Dilshan was a key part of the Sri Lankan cricket team until he retired from the format in 2016. In 35 matches, Dilshan scored 897 runs for the 2013/14 champions. His best score in the tournament remains 96, as he scored a total of six half-centuries in the World Cup.

6. Chris Gayle: 965 runs

Sixth in this list, Chris Gayle has hit 63 maximums in the T20 World Cup, the most by any player in the tournament’s history.

He was also the first player to score a century in the tournament, and is the only batsman to score 100+ scores twice in the tournament. Gayle, who won two titles with the West Indies, scored 965 runs in 33 matches.

5. David Warner: 984 runs

One of Australia’s greatest T20I batters of all time, David Warner scored 984 runs in 41 matches for Australia, primarily playing as an opener. With a strike rate of 134, he scored eight half-centuries in the competition, the most by any Australian player.

4. Mahela Jayawardene: 1016 runs

Despite retiring from T20I cricket in 2014, Mahela Jayawardene remains fourth on the list. He was the first player to score more than 1000 runs in the T20 World Cup, and even in 2026, only three more players have reached the milestone. With a resounding average of 39.07, Jayawardene accumulated 1,016 runs for Sri Lanka in 31 games.

3. Jos Buttler: 1066 runs

Veteran English batter Jos Buttler has a golden opportunity to become the highest run-getter in the T20 World Cup in 2026. The 35-year-old has not played many long innings for the Three Lions; however, he has always stepped up in times of crisis.

Currently fulfilling the role of a wicketkeeper-batter, Buttler is one of the most experienced players in the English line-up.

In 39 matches at the T20 World Cup, Jos Buttler has bagged 1,066 runs with an average of 40.76 and a strike rate of 147. Additionally, he has one century and five fifties in the competition.

2. Rohit Sharma: 1220 runs

Rohit Sharma is the only Indian player to have won the T20 World Cup twice. At the age of 20, he was a part of the World Cup-winning Indian team in 2007.

During the last edition, he guided the Men in Blue to their second triumph. Sharma never scored a century in the competition but racked up 12 fifties, accumulating 1220 runs in 44 innings at an average of nearly 35.

1. Virat Kohli: 1292 runs

Virat Kohli has scored the most runs in the history of the ICC T20 World Cup. He made his debut in the competition during the 2012 campaign in Sri Lanka, where India were eliminated in the Super 8.

During the same campaign, he was also the highest run-getter for the Men in Blue, accumulating 175 runs in five innings.

Before retiring from T20 cricket, he helped India win the title during the last edition. In 35 matches, Kohli scored 1292 runs with an average of 58.72, and his highest score was 89.
