England’s Joe Root has cracked the second-most test centuries in 2024.

2024 has seen plenty of cracking action in test cricket. The year started with the West Indies shocking Australia at the Gabba. In Asia, India thumped England’s Bazballers.

At home, England defeated the West Indies and Sri Lanka. But perhaps the most historic moment in test cricket this year came in Rawalpindi, where Bangladesh registered their first-ever test series win over Pakistan. Sri Lanka, too, have been impressive as well with wins over England and New Zealand.

There have been plenty of spectacular individual batting performances in test cricket this year. A few batters have shown exceptional consistency in scoring runs and charting up milestones.

In this article, we will have a look at the top five batters who have registered the most test centuries in 2024.

Top five batsmen with the most test centuries in 2024:

5. Kane Williamson – 3

Despite dealing with multiple injuries last year, former New Zealand captain Kane Williamson has been in a good touch this year in the longest format.

In 10 innings of six tests, Williamson averages 62 with three centuries and two fifties. All three of his tons came against South Africa at home in February.

4. Shubman Gill – 3

At the start of the year, Shubman Gill was on the verge of losing his place in India’s test XI after being put into a new role of No. 3. However, a century against England in Vizag, followed by 91 in Rajkot and a century in Dharamsala cemented his spot in the side.

He carried his form into the test series against Bangladesh and notched up a century in Chennai. Gill averages 56 after 13 innings this year.

3. Ollie Pope – 3

Ollie Pope is having an ordinary year in test cricket. He started 2024 with one of the greatest innings by an Englishman in India, when his 196 helped his side win the Hyderabad test. However, his form slipped after that and he went into a lean patch.

He managed to resurrect some of it with centuries in the home test series against West Indies and Sri Lanka. Yet, he averages 37 after 20 innings this year.

2. Joe Root – 4

Joe Root continues his unbelievable form in test cricket. He has averaged over 45 in each of the four years sicne 2021; this year, he averages 54 after 20 innings, in which he’s piled up 986 runs with four centuries and as many fifties.

One of his four centuries was in Ranchi, while the other three were at home against Sri Lanka and West Indies. In the home summer, he went past Alastair Cook’s record of most test centuries for England.

1. Kamindu Mendis – 5

Words would fall short to describe what Kamindu Mendis has done this year. His run-scoring – that too for a batter with such inexperience – is on historic levels. In 12 test innings in 2024 so far, Kamindu has racked up 943 runs at an average of 94.3.

The left-handed Sri Lankan has registered five centuries and three fifties. He made his test debut in 2022 and scored 61 in his maiden innings, but didn’t get to play a single test in 2023. He is the first batter in test cricket’s history to make a fifty-plus score in each of his first eight test matches.

Opportunities came this year and he’s grabbed it with both hands. He hit two tons against Bangladesh in Sylhet, a century against England at The Oval, and two hundreds against New Zealand in Galle.
