BBL 2025-26: Qualification scenarios of all teams explained

Only two teams have qualified for the BBL 2025-26 knockout stage, while rest are still battling out for the remaining spots.

The 15th edition of the Big Bash League, BBL 2025-26, has turned into a thriller, with five teams in the round robin still standing a chance to play in the final. Five games still remain in the regular season, and with every match, the list will get narrower.

Only Hobart Hurricanes and Melbourne Stars have secured a berth in the next round, but they can also lose their top two spots in the league table if the Perth Scorchers and the Brisbane Heat go flawless in their remaining games.

Thus, without further ado, let’s take a look at the qualification scenarios of all the teams in the Big Bash League.

BBL 2025-26: Qualification scenarios of all teams explained

Hobart Hurricanes

Hobart Hurricanes have secured a spot in the playoffs with six wins in nine matches. The Hurricanes accumulated 13 points in the league stage. Their regular season also ended early as compared to other teams. They will have more time to recover before they step into the playoffs, starting from January 20.

To qualify: already qualified.

Melbourne Stars

After getting a stellar start to the season, the Melbourne Stars got derailed with three consecutive losses. However, an 8-wicket triumph over the Renegades helped the team gain confidence. Not only this, they also booked their berth in the next stage with 12 points in 9 games.

The Stars’ one remaining game is scheduled for January 17 against the Perth Scorchers. If they win that game, they can end the league stage at top of points table.

To qualify: already qualified.

Perth Scorchers

The Perth Scorchers are also amongst the teams in the fight for the top four spot. With a steep NRR of +1.162 and 10 points after eight matches, the Scorchers are likely to secure a spot in the playoffs.

However, they will be facing the Melbourne Renegades (January 15) and the Melbourne Stars (January 17) in two crucial matches before the regular season ends. The Perth Scorchers only require a single win to secure a spot in the next stage. Perth can also top the leaderboard.

But, losing both league games can potentially eliminate them as well as along with them two more teams are in contention ad well.

To qualify: Win one out of the two remaining matches.

Brisbane Heat

With an NRR of -0.375, the Brisbane Heat are fourth in the league with eight points. The Heat are required to win both their remaining match to secure a spot in the play-offs. If they lose, then their fate will depend on the performances of the other teams.

Their remaining game are against the Sixers on (Jan 18). If they lose that game, they will be eliminated from the tournament.

To qualify: must win their last games.

Sydney Sixers

The Sydney Sixers’ recent game against the Hurricanes was abandoned. Thus, they are required to win at least one match to stay safe in the race for the playoffs. They are scheduled to face the Sydney Thunder on January 16 and the Brisbane Heat on January 18, before the regular season concludes. Meanwhile, two wins would solidify their place in the next stage.

The Sixers would also monitor a few upcoming games. If the Sydney Sixers lose both their games, they are likely to be eliminated.

To qualify: must win both their games.

Adelaide Strikers

With only six points in nine games, the Adelaide Strikers have been eliminated from the tournament. In the 9 games, they have won just three games.

To qualify: Eliminated

Melbourne Renegades

The Melbourne Renegades have two remaining games in the BBL 2025-26, and if they win both nothing would happen for them. They have already been eliminated from the tournament. They are at seventh spot at the points table with six points,

Sydney Thunders

With only two points in nine games, the Sydney Thunder have been eliminated as well. They will lock horns against the Sixers on January 16 in their last game and would want to end the tournament on a high.

To qualify: Eliminated
