BBL 2026-27 full schedule announced; Chennai to host tournament opener
Big Bash League season 16 will start in December.
One of the biggest T20 leagues of the World, the Big Bash League (BBL) of Australia, is set to return as Cricket Australia announced the schedule of the sixteenth edition of the league.
It is among the most celebrated events in Australia. Players from different countries participate in the tournament and contribute to the growing popularity of the T20 format globally.
The BBL 2026-27 will see opening encounter to be played in India. The first match of the season will be play at M.A. Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai on December 12, 2026.
The Final is set to be played on January 26, 2027, making the tournament more than a month long. The schedule for the 2026-27 season was released on July 14 by the BBL.
Perth Scorchers and Melbourne Renegades to play BBL 2026-27 opener
Perth Scorchers won the BBL 2025-26 season and will feature in the first match of the 2026-27 season, alongside former champions Melbourne Renegades. The match will be played in Chennai on December 12.
A total of eight teams are set to contest for the trophy – Perth Scorchers, Melbourne Renegades, Melbourne Stars, Sydney Sixers, Hobart Hurricanes, Brisbane Heat, Adelaide Strikers, and Sydney Thunder.
The event from 12th December 2026 to 26th January 2027 will comprise of 40 matches, where each of the eight teams will play 10 league matches. The knockout structure is similar to that of the Indian Premier League (IPL), where there are two qualifiers and one eliminator before the Final.
A total of 10 venues will host the matches for this high-octane T20 league, which includes iconic stadiums like The Gabba, The MCG, The SCG and the Adelaide Oval, among others.

“We’re hugely excited by the opportunity to open the season in Chennai and can’t wait to see the return of Christmas Eve cricket under lights at Junction Oval.
Most of the league stage fixtures are scheduled to begin at 7:15 PM (AEDT), with some exceptions. The matches will be broadcasted on Channel Seven, 7Plus, Fox Sports, and Kayo Sports in Australia.
