Morne Morkel previously served as the bowling coach of the Pakistan cricket team.

In a significant development, former South African pacer Morne Morkel has been appointed as the new bowling coach of the Indian men’s senior cricket team

Last month, many media reports hinted that Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir requested the BCCI to rope in former Proteas speedster Morkel as the new bowling coach.

Later on, a report by the Economic Times revealed that BCCI has rejected Gambhir’s proposal of Morkel as the new India bowling coach.

Jay Shah confirms Morkel’s appointment as the new bowling coach of the Indian side

Both Gautam Gambhir and Morkel have had a good relationship and also worked together in the past. In the Indian Premier League (IPL), Gambhir and Morkel worked at the Lucknow Super Giants franchise for two years.

Gambhir served as the mentor, whereas Morne was bowling coach of the Lucknow-based franchise.

The former Proteas pacer Morkel also served with the Pakistan cricket team as their bowling coach during the ICC ODI World Cup 2023, but resigned from the job before his contract was due to expire.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, 14th August, BCCI secretary Jay Shah confirmed the appointment of Morkel as the new bowling coach of the Indian cricket team.

“Yes, Morne Morkel has been appointed bowling coach of the senior India men’s team,” Jay Shah told PTI.

It is now understood that, Morkel was unable to join the Indian team on their recent tour of Sri Lanka due to personal reasons. Morkel will join the squad for the upcoming home series against Bangladesh, which will kick off with the Chennai test on September 19.

The 39-year-old Morkel played 86 tests, 117 ODIs and 44 T20Is for South Africa picking a total of 544 international wickets.
