Gautam Gambhir has faced lot of criticism as India’s red-ball coach.

The Indian Cricket Team is set to play Sri Lanka in a two-match Test series, starting from August 15. This series holds great importance for the India as they are looking to strengthen their chances of making it to the final of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27.

The path is not easy, as they are currently placed fifth in the ICC WTC points table and will be looking to qualify for the top two. They will be facing New Zealand and Australia next in a two-match and a five-match Test series, which makes the challenge even tougher.

The head coach of the Indian team, Gautam Gambhir, has had brilliant success with the white-ball team, as he has won two ICC titles already, a Champions Trophy and a T20 World Cup. However, his returns as the coach of the Test team have been poor, and the India lost two home series under his tenure, breaking an unbeaten streak of more than 12 years.

Many critics want Gambhir to step down as the red-ball coach and focus entirely on the shorter formats. However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) continues to back Gambhir despite his poor returns.

The Indian Test team would like to whitewash Sri Lanka at their home to increase their chances of making it to the ICC WTC, and even a single loss or a draw can affect their chances by a huge margin. However, according to Revsportz, Gautam Gambhir will continue to serve as the head coach of the Indian team irrespective of the outcome in the Test series vs Sri Lanka.

The BCCI trusts Gambhir wholeheartedly as the head coach of the Indian team in all three formats, and we may see him continuing to be there. Gambhir’s contract as the coach of the Indian team is till December 2027. His future in the Indian setup is uncertain after that time period, but he has a lot of work to do as he will be coaching the team in the Cricket World Cup 2027.

The final of the ICC WTC 2025–27 is scheduled from June 9 to June 13, 2027, at The Oval in London. India will need to win at least seven of their remaining nine games to make it to the final of the WTC, and the fans will be backing Gambhir and Co.

What are the remaining Test series for the Indian team in this WTC cycle?

India have three Test series remaining in the 2025–27 WTC cycle: Sri Lanka (2 Tests), New Zealand (2 Tests), and Australia (5 Tests).

When is the final of the WTC 2025–27?

The 2025–27 World Test Championship Final is scheduled to be played from June 9 to June 13, 2027, at The Oval in London.
