Many reports claimed that BCCI has approached VVS Laxman to replace Gautam Gambhir as head coach of Indian Test team.
Indian Cricket Team head coach Gautam Gambhir has been under pressure after yet another Test series loss at home. The 44-year-old saw his side getting beaten by South Africa by a 2-0 margin to slide down the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 rankings. This was Gambhir’s second Test series against a big-team at home after suffering a 3-0 whitewash to New Zealand last year.
Following the losses, talks to remove Gautam Gambhir has become a trending topic in Indian cricket. There were reports which claimed that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is considering replacing Gambhir as the Test coach. Former India batter VVS Laxman was the name floated around as the new coach for the longest format of the game.
The reports were in news all around but amid that, the board now wants Gambhir to continue at the helm till his stint ends in 2027. BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla has made a huge statement on Gambhir’s future, saying that they don’t have any plan to replace head coach.
Speaking to ANI, Mr, Shukla said: “I want to make it very clear regarding the speculation circulating in the media about head coach Gautam Gambhir. The BCCI secretary (Devajit Saikia) has also made it very clear that there is no plan to remove Gambhir or bring in a new head coach for India.”

Devajit Saikia in his chat with ANI also said:
“This is totally incorrect news going on. This is totally speculative news. Some very reputed news agencies are also flashing the news. There is no truth to it. BCCI straight away denies. People can think all they want, but BCCI has not taken any steps. This is somebody’s figment of imagination; there is no truth in it, and I cannot say anything except that this is factually incorrect and baseless news.”
Huge challenge lined up for India and Gautam Gambhir
Team India will next host New Zealand in a ODI and T20I series. After this the Men in Blue will defend their ICC T20 World Cup crown at home when the tournament begins in February. It is a huge test for Gambhir as he will hope to win India’s third ICC title in the white-ball format in a span of 20 months.
The biggest talking point was the axing of Shubman Gill from the T20I format. The 26-year-old was also removed as the vice-captain with Axar Patel taking over the mantle for the T20 World Cup 2026.
