A few former Indian cricketers have approached the BCCI to host an IPL-like tournament for the retired players.

In a significant development, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) might start an Indian Premier League (IPL)-like league with retired cricketers playing in it.

Recently, the World Championship of Legends (WCL) was hosted in England by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). The tournament became a massive hit among the cricket fans.

The Yuvraj Singh-led India won the inaugural edition by defeating the Younis Khan-led Pakistan in the grand finale of the tournament.

Ex-Indian cricketers express their wish for a tournament like IPL

A host of retired Indian players have been taking part in various T20 leagues across the globe. Some prominent names like Yuvraj Singh, Virender Sehwag, Ambati Rayudu, Suresh Raina, Harbhajan Singh, Irfan Pathan and Yusuf Pathan have played in different leagues following their retirements from international, IPL and domestic cricket.

According to a report in Dainik Jagran, a few former Indian players who have played in various T20 leagues met the board secretary Jay Shah and expressed their wish for the board to organize an IPL-like tournament in India.

“We have received a proposal from former cricketers in this regard. We are mulling over it,” a BCCI source was quoted as saying by Dainik Jagran.

The report further added that the board hasn’t taken any final decision yet on this topic. If it goes through, fans would get to see the former cricketers back on the field.

There could even be an auction as it happens in the IPL. The teams would be based city-wise.

In recent years, former players have participated in tournaments like the Road Safety World Series, World Championship of Legends, Global Legends League, and Legends League. But all of them are organised by private bodies, not by the BCCI.
