Shreyas Iyer had suffered the injury while taking the catch of Alex Carey during the third ODI in Sydney.

Following reports that Shreyas Iyer had internal bleeding and was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) released an update regarding his rib injury. Iyer suffered the injury during the third ODI between Australia and India, which was played in Sydney.

India lost the series to Australia 2-1, but their players’ incredible efforts won people over. Although Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma were the series’ main stars, a number of players helped make the one-week action a successful narrative. Among the names was definitely Shreyas Iyer.

When Shreyas Iyer made a remarkable attempt to grab a catch to eliminate Alex Carey, he suffered a rather serious injury. This was the turning point that ultimately caused Australia’s innings to collapse. But the brutal impact of hitting the ground caused him to suffer severe injuries, and his ribs rattled.

According to the BCCI, he has a laceration injury to his spleen in addition to an impact injury to his lower left rib cage. His injured status is being continuously monitored by the Sydney doctors and the BCCI Medical team, and he is healing and in a stable medical condition. To assess Iyer’s daily development, the team physician is remaining in Sydney with him.

“Shreyas Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage region while fielding during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney on 25th October 2025. He was taken to the hospital for further evaluation.

Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well. The BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his injury status. The Indian Team Doctor will remain in Sydney with Shreyas to evaluate his day-to-day progress,” BCCI stated in an official statement.

Earlier, it was stated that the scans had not shown any fracture, and hence, Shreyas Iyer’s recovery schedule was thought to be around 3 weeks. This meant that Iyer would have made it in time for the South Africa ODIs at home that begins on November 30.
