BCCI secretary Jay Shah confirmed India won’t be hosting the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah has confirmed that India is not willing to host the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 amid political crisis in the land of actual hosts of the tournament, Bangladesh.
Bangladesh has the hosting rights of the upcoming ICC Women’s event, which is scheduled to be played from October 3 to 20. The ninth edition of the Women’s T20 World Cup will be played across two venues in Bangladesh – Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka and Sylhet International Cricket Stadium in Sylhet.
Since July, Bangladesh students have been protesting against a controversial quota system for government jobs. Sadly, the situation became worse when around 300 people were dead amid ongoing protests.
On August 5, the protests took a violent turn which even forced the then Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resign from her position and flee the country.
A few days back, the International Cricket Council (ICC) issued an official statement amid the ongoing political instability in Bangladesh. The ICC said that they are closely monitoring the situation in Bangladesh and they are in touch with their security agencies.
Many reports emerged that if the ICC mulls shifting the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, then India or Sri Lanka might host the upcoming ICC tournament.
I have categorically said no: Jay Shah
In a latest development, BCCI secretary Jay Shah has confirmed that India is not going to host the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup 2024. Shah revealed that the ICC had a dialogue with BCCI to host the tournament, but the Indian cricketing board has denied to host.
“They (ICC) have asked us if we would conduct the World Cup. I have categorically said no,” Shah stated during an interaction with the Times Group journalists at the TOI’s Mumbai office on Wednesday.
“We’re in the monsoon and on top of that we will host the women’s ODI World Cup next year. I don’t want to give any kind of signals that I want to hold consecutive World Cups,” Jay Shah added.
Bangladesh series is very important to us: Jay Shah
The BCCI secretary Shah made it clear that the upcoming home series against Bangladesh is important for India. The Indian cricket team are all set to play two tests and three T20Is against the Bangladesh cricket team, starting on September 19.
“We’ve not spoken to them (the Bangladesh authorities). A new government has taken charge there. They might reach out to us or else I will reach out to them. The Bangladesh series is very important to us,” Shah added.
