India have been below-par with their performances in the last few months under Gautam Gambhir.

India’s recent run of results in series and matches away from home has prompted an increase in attention around the national team’s preparation. India still have a large pool of internationally talented cricketers who have the ability to produce consistent performance in overseas conditions.

With the team entering another demanding stretch of international matches, the BCCI in India is now expected to examine some of the issues surrounding India’s recent struggles in the away games. The review could become significant for the coaching as well as selection of players ahead of India’s upcoming tour to New Zealand.

According to a report by The Indian Express, the BCCI has called Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir, chief selector Ajit Agarkar and CoE head VVS Laxman for a review meeting. The discussions are likely to focus on India’s disappointing away series results as well as the frequent injuries surrounding crucial players.

The meeting comes at a point when India’s overseas performance have become a major area of concern. The team has struggled to produce consistent results in the ODI format over the last few series’ and now their T20I campaign has also witnessed a significant dip following their defeats to Ireland and England.

India faced a humiliating 2-0 defeat to Ireland, followed by a 4-0 defeat to England, which is more than just humiliating to the three-time World T20 Champions. However, the meeting is most likely to consider a broader range of issues rather than just India’s recent results.

The injury crisis is another major concern. Several prominent players, despite having spent months under rehabilitation, are unable to make timely recoveries ahead of major tournaments and crucial games. The recent selection of players like Jasprit Bumrah, Nitish Reddy and Harshit Rana for the Afghanistan series were attached to fitness conditions as well.

Laxman could be asked his stance on the status of these players and the reason behind growing injury concerns. Hence, bringing together the head coach, the CoE head and the chief selector clearly underlines the seriousness of the situation. It also underlines the board’s agenda to treat this as a collective unit rather than treating them as isolated issues.
