Indian cricket is slowly moving towards an important phase as the team starts preparing for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2027. The tournament will be played in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia, and India will be looking to build a strong squad before the big event.
India have several important assignments, coming up in the current session. The team is scheduled to play ODI series against West Indies, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe during the 2026-27 home season. It will help the selectors to find the right combination and make a perfect & balanced squad for the tournament.
With most of the matches in World Cup scheduled to be played in South Africa, it makes sense for India to tour the country before the tournament. Playing in the same venues could help the batters and bowlers understand the pitches and weather conditions better.
Reports now suggest that India could play an ODI series in South Africa in the second half of 2027, just before the World Cup begins. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly in talks with Cricket South Africa (CSA) to arrange the series.

According to reports in Indian Express, the Indian team management has requested the BCCI to arrange a preparatory ODI series in South Africa. The board is now in discussions with CSA for a tour, which will include four to six matches.
The series is expected to be played in the weeks leading up to the ODI World Cup. This would give India valuable time to adapt to the local conditions before the tournament starts.
India last played an ODI series in South Africa in December 2023 under the leadership of KL Rahul. A full-length ODI series in 2027 would be a major boost for India’s World Cup preparations. The players could gain important experience at venues that will host the World Cup matches.
The 2027 ODI World Cup will be played across 12 venues. South Africa will host matches at eight grounds, including Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, Centurion, Gqeberha, Bloemfontein, Paarl and East London.
Zimbabwe will host games at Harare, Bulawayo and the new Mosi-oa-Tunya International Cricket Stadium near Victoria Falls. Namibia’s capital, Windhoek, will be the 12th venue that will be hosting the matches of the 2027 Cricket World Cup.
If the talks are successful, India could play four to six ODIs against South Africa. The matches may be played across three or four cities, giving the players exposure to different grounds.
The series would also help both teams improve their squads before the World Cup. South Africa will want to use the matches to test their own combinations and build confidence at home.
