In international cricket, a substitute can generally be used in specific circumstances, such as a concussion, whereas in the IPL, this is not required, and a team can make one change to their playing XI at any point during the course of a match.
However, this particular rule has been surrounded by controversy and has often been criticised by many players as well as coaches. The introduction of the Impact Player rule has given an unfair advantage to the batting side, which can use it to increase their batting depth.
Earlier, when a total of 200 used to be considered enough, nowadays it often feels like an under-par score, and batters have become more aggressive than before, knowing that they have greater batting depth. BCCI officials have often discussed reviewing the Impact Player rule, and now they will be taking feedback from IPL franchises.

As per the reports in Cricbuzz, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has sought feedback from IPL franchises on the Impact Player rule. The franchises have been given August 31 (Monday) as the deadline to submit their feedback regarding the rule.
The BCCI has also sought their views on other issues, including PMOA matters, umpiring, practice sessions and playing conditions. However, the most important subject in a recent brief communication to the teams has been the Impact Player rule.
The BCCI is seeking input from the teams and will then review all the relevant matters. Ever since the Impact Player rule was introduced, the league has seen many high-scoring games, which has raised questions about whether the game is fair to bowlers.
Several stars, including Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel and Shubman Gill, have openly opposed the idea of the Impact Player rule, and we might see the rule changed in the upcoming cycle.
