BCCI provides update on injury status of Jasprit Bumrah and Shreyas Iyer
BCCI issues update on star Indian cricketers, Jasprit Bumrah and Shreyas Iyer.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has issued an update on Jasprit Bumrah and Shreyas Iyer regarding their back injuries, forcing them to miss the ongoing IPL 2023. The board revealed that Bumrah underwent back surgery in New Zealand, while Iyer will be under the knife next week.
Bumrah last played for India in September 2022, which was a T20I against Australia in Hyderabad. The right-arm pacer missed the T20 World Cup in Australia and India's bilateral series leading up to IPL 2023. Along with the cash-rich league, the 30-year-old is unlikely to feature in the World Test Championship (WTC) final, set to start on June 7th. The BCCI reported that the Mumbai Indians' star remains pain-free and will start his rehab in six weeks.
"Mr Jasprit Bumrah underwent surgery in New Zealand on his lower back, which was successful and he remains pain-free. The fast bowler was advised by the specialist to start his rehab six weeks after the surgery and accordingly, Mr Bumrah has commenced his rehab management at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru from Friday.", the statement from BCCI read.
Meanwhile, Iyer's last game was the Ahmedabad Test against Australia last month; however, he did not bat due to a back injury. The 27-year-old missed the following ODI series against Australia and was supposed to return for the second half of IPL 2023. It emerged later that he had to have surgery and could miss the WTC final. After surgery, the Mumbai-born cricketer will remain under the surgeon's care for two weeks and will return to the NCA for rehab.
"Mr Shreyas Iyer is scheduled to undergo surgery for his lower back issue next week. He will remain under the surgeon’s care for two weeks and will return to the NCA after that for rehabilitation.", the statement from BCCI read.
"Jasprit Bumrah is going to find his own way" - Ian Bishop
A couple of days ago, former West Indian fast bowler Ian Bishop underlined how unique is Bumrah's action, but it has become too late to change it and that he must find a way to manage it moving forward to remain injury free. Bishop told PTI:
"Everybody has got a unique way in how they formulate their action and Jasprit is more unique than most others, so I think he has got to use the physical gifts he was blessed with fine tune it as he goes along. It is a tough one? How do you change? Mikey Holding is like a father figure to me and I know he spoke to Mark Wood about extending his run-up to alleviate the exacting force on his body compared to a shorter run. Mark has done that and it seems to have assisted him. So Jasprit Bumrah is going to find his own way. I don't think you can look at changing his action."
The right-arm pacer is likely to return for the 2023 World Cup on home soil.
