Ben Stokes retired hurt during Northern Superchargers’ match against Manchester Originals on Sunday.
Ten days before the first test against Sri Lanka, England test captain Ben Stokes suffered a hamstring injury while playing in The Hundred.
Stokes turned up for Northern Superchargers on Sunday evening at the Old Trafford, Manchester, against Manchester Originals. He sustained a hamstring injury while batting and limped off the field with the support of two people from Superchargers’ medical team.
Starting August 21, England will host Dhananjaya de Silva-led Sri Lankan team for a three-match test series, the first of which will be played in Manchester.
Ben Stokes’ injury doesn’t look great: Harry Brook
The injury happened in Superchargers’ innings when Stokes, batting as an opener, took a quick single and collapsed on the ground before throwing away his gloves. He was seen clutching his left hamstring. The medical staff arrived and helped him off the field. Later, he was seen in the dugout with crutches when shaking hands with the Originals squad.
Harry Brook, Stokes’ captain at Northern Superchargers and England team-mate, said, “It doesn’t look great, unfortunately. I think he’ll be getting a scan tomorrow and we’ll see how he is.”
A Superchargers spokesperson said: “Ben Stokes is having his hamstring assessed. Further updates will be available from tomorrow [Monday].”
Should Stokes miss the first test or more against Sri Lanka, vice-captain Ollie Pope would be expected to lead the Three Lions. Pope has never captained England in any format in his career so far.
England are already missing opener Zak Crawley due to a fractured finger. Dan Lawrence is set to open against Lanka.
