Ben Stokes is a household name among cricket fans. The former England Test captain is known for his courage, boldness, and outspoken nature as a player. However, he shocked everyone when he announced his international retirement one month back.
It was the third and final test between England and New Zealand at Trent Bridge, and Stokes confirmed that he won’t be playing any international match after the game. The announcement came after a tough week due to a nightclub incident in London.
The 35-year-old said that he was mentally and physically burnt out after four and a half years of the tough job of captaincy. As a result, Joe Root was named the new captain of the Test side.
Many believed that Stokes might return to the Test series, as England will be travelling to Australia for the Ashes next year. However, Stokes has finally opened up about the possibility of his return to this sport. He has ended his silence and talked about his future plans.
Ben Stokes wants to be head coach of England in the future
In a recent interaction on the Love of Cricket podcast, Stokes revealed that he would like to return to cricket as a coach. He revealed that he is currently pursuing Level 3 coaching.
He said, “I know what I want to do in terms of staying within the game, which is to be a coach. Would I love to be the coach of England one day? Absolutely. I just really like the idea of being, again, like, in some form of leadership away from playing.”
Stokes also wished Root luck for his second stint as English Test captain under new head coach Stephen Fleming. Notably, Stokes has also worked closely with Fleming during his time with Chennai Super Kings in the IPL.
The 35-year-old ruled out any possibility of his return for the Ashes next year. He said, “I never once thought, ‘I’m just going to give it up and just keep going as a player. I’m 35. If I’m not going to be captain, I think I’d find it tough to do it.”
After Stokes’ retirement, the ECB also sacked Brendon McCullum from Test and named Fleming the new coach. England are scheduled to face Pakistan in three tests starting on August 19.
