After two consecutive T20 World Cups over the last two years, it was time for cricket’s most prestigious ODI World Cup to return. Most teams concentrated on the 50-over format and played a good amount of white-ball cricket in the longer format. This calendar year also witnessed a few magnificent performances. From Glenn Maxwell to Shubman Gill and Shaheen Afridi to Mohammed Shami, all made useful contributions for their side, leading them to historic victories.
Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell’s double-century in chase against Afghanistan will always be rated as ‘The best ODI knock’ played. 1. Rohit Sharma (C) :
Indian captain Rohit Sharma had a wonderful outing in ODIs in the year 2023 and went on to score 1255 runs in 26 innings. Rohit Sharma’s special batting effort took India to the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 final. He also led his side to Asia Cup 2023 win. Rohit Sharma smashed 2 centuries and 9 half-centuries this year and smashed 67 sixes in the ODIs.
2. Shubman Gill :
Indian opener Shubman Gill also had a terrific run with the bat in ODIs in 2023 and went on to score five centuries with a blistering double-century against New Zealand in Hyderabad. Young right-hand batter Gill scored 1584 runs in 29 innings, he is also the leading run-scorer in ODIs this year. His average stands at 63.36, while he scored all the runs at a strike rate at 105.45.
3. Virat Kohli :
Indian batting ace Virat Kohli too had a great year with the bat in ODIs. He scored 1377 runs in 24 innings with six centuries to his name. In the year, he went past his idol Sachin Tendulkar’s record for most centuries in the format. He also went on to win “Player of The Tournament” award in ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, but couldn’t lead his team to a win in the finals against Australia.
4. Daryll Mitchell :
The Kiwi all-rounder played a pivotal role for the Blackcaps in 2023. Daryl Mitchell’s magnificent run of form made him the 4th leading run-scorer in 50-over cricket in 2023. Mitchell’s blistering knocks helped the Kiwis put on a great challenge at the 2023 ODI World Cup in India. The middle-order batsman scored 1204 runs in 25 innings, with 5 centuries and 3 half-centuries to his name.
5. Heinrich Klaasen (Wk) :
South African wicket-keeper Heinrich Klassen is among the top match-winners for South Africa in the year 2023. Heinrich Klaasen smashed 3 centuries in 2023 including his career-best 174 against Australia in Centurion. Klassen scored 927 runs at an outstanding strike rate of 140.66 in 22 ODI innings in 2023.
6. Glenn Maxwell :
Glenn Maxwell played the the best ODI innings ever in 2023 and made the year special for him with his performances in the last few months. Maxwell scored an unbeaten 201 against Afghanistan in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 to take his side home while chasing 292 runs after being put under pressure at 91/7. Maxwell also scored the fastest ODI World Cup century in 40 just balls. Maxwell played 11 ODIs in 2023 and scored 413 runs and picked 10 wickets.
7. Adam Zampa :
Australia leg-spinner Adam Zampa had a troubled start to his campaign in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 and went wicket-less in his first two games, but he bounced back nicely with a four-wicket haul. Adam Zampa went on to pick 38 wickets in the entire calendar year, out of which 23 came in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. Zampa played 20 ODI games for Australia in 2023 and bowled with a magnificent economy rate of 5.78.
8. Kuldeep Yadav :
Indian spinner Kuldeep Yadav is the leading wicket-taker in ODIs in 2023 and will be slated in every ODI playing XI of this calendar year. Kuldeep Yadav ended his 2023 with just one short of 50 wickets. Yadav picked up 49 wickets in 30 ODI games. Kuldeep’s economy has also been phenomenal as it stands at 4.61. Kuldeep picked up one five-wicket haul in 2023.
9. Mohammed Siraj :
Indian right-arm pacer Mohammed Siraj also had a fantastic run in ODIs in 2023. Siraj’s magnificent spell against Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup final helped India win the trophy. Mohammed Siraj replicated a similar performance against the same opposition two months later in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 match at Wankhede. He finished 2023 with 44 wickets in 25 ODIs.
10. Mohammed Shami :
Right-arm pacer Mohammed Shami turned everything around with his magnificent performance in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. Shami had a special tournament and finished as the leading wicket-taker of the tournament and also as third highest wicket-taker in the calendar year. Right-arm pacer Mohammed Shami picked up 43 wickets in just 19 ODI games.
11. Shaheen Afridi :
Shaheen Afridi had a dismal ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 in India, but he made an impactful performance for Pakistan in the calendar year. Shaheen Afridi went wicket-less in only one ODI in 2023, which came against New Zealand played at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. Shaheen played 21 ODI matches for Pakistan in 2023 and picked up 42 wickets at an economy rate of 5.59.
