Rohit Sharma has the best win percentage as an Indian captain in T20I cricket.

Team India created history when they became the first team to win the ICC T20 World Cup in 2007 in South Africa. They are also one of the three teams to win the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup twice, along with the West Indies and England. MS Dhoni finished his captaincy career as most successful captain for India in T20Is.

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma also led the team In T20Is for a certain period of time, and India did well under both of them. Here, we will talk about the top five most successful captains in T20I cricket for India. Rohit Sharma, during his tenure as India’s T20I captain, had an unbelievable winning percentage.

5. Hardik Pandya – 10 wins

Hardik Pandya captained India in T20Is since completion of the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia, but then later lost the captaincy to Suryakumar Yadav post Rohit Sharma’s retirement from the shortest format. He led India in 16 T20Is and won 10 out of them. Five matches ended in losses, while one ended without any result.

4. Suryakumar Yadav – 17 wins

Suryakumar Yadav made his captaincy debut in the five-match T20I series against Australia after the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. He started with a brilliant performance and won the series as a captain. Later after India won the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 and Rohit Sharma retired from the shortest format, Suryakumar was made India’s regular captain in the format and has been leading the side well since then.

Suryakumar has captained India in 21 T20Is, out of which, India have won 17 and lost four.

3. Virat Kohli :

Virat Kohli took charge of Indian team as captain after MS Dhoni in all three formats. He led the T20I team until the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 in UAE. Under Virat, India played a total of 50 matches and won 30 of those, while losing 16 and two ended in a tie and two with no result.

MS Dhoni was the first Indian captain to have lifted the T20 World Cup title in 2007. Apart from that, India won a number of series overseas as well under Dhoni. Dhoni led India in 72 T20Is, Under Dhoni, India won 41 games, lost 28, one game ended in a tie and two with no result.

1. Rohit Sharma – 50 wins:

Rohit Sharma, who took over as India’s full-time T20I captain after 2021 Men’s T20 World Cup, is India’s most successful captain in T20Is.

He then led India to semi-finals of Men’s T20 World Cup in 2022 before leading them to title victory in 2024. Rohit captained India in 62 T20Is, out of which, India won 50 and lost 12.

Rohit called it quits from the shortest format of the game after leading India to Men’s T20 World Cup title in 2024.
