The fourth BGT 2024-25 test in Melbourne got underway on Thursday in front of a huge crowd.

Day 1 of the Boxing day test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 was filled with plenty of action and drama. Eventually, the hosts Australia have their noses slightly ahead in the contest, but India could storm right back in the game on day 2 as they did on day 1.

Sams Konstas had a memorable initiation into test cricket as he hammered 34 runs off 33 balls against Jasprit Bumrah, Australia’s tormentor this series, with four fours and two sixes. He also took Mohammed Siraj for 20 runs off 19 balls with two fours.

Konstas recorded third-fastest fifty on test debut by an Australian and the fastest by an opener when he reached the landmark off his 52nd delivery.

After two failed attempts of a reverse-scoop off Bumrah, the 19-year-old Konstas scooped the Indian speedster before successfully reverse-scooping him for a six that earned him a huge roar from the MCG crowd.

He was dismissed for 60 runs off 65 balls. Konstas’ innings had a ripple effect on his opening partner Usman Khawaja, who notched up his first fifty of the series. Marnus Labuschange, too, recorded a well-made fifty, while Steve Smith remained unbeaten on 68*,

Normal services resumed for Bumrah, though, as he carried the bowling attack once again and brought India back in the game with three quick strikes with the old ball, including those of Travis Head (0) and Mitchell Marsh (4).

At stumps on day 1, Australia are 311/6.
