Australia won the BGT 2024-25 by a 3-1 scoreline.

Australia clinched the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 with their win at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on Sunday. This victory meant Australia won the series 3-1 and marked their first BGT win since 2015.

For India, the defeat marks the end of their ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 campaign. Once favourites to qualify for the final, back-to-back humiliating losses – 0-3 against New Zealand at home and 1-3 against Australia away – have raised serious questions about the future of Indian cricket.

Batting was a major setback for the visitors, with experienced players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli failing to make an impact. Yashasvi Jaiswal emerged as India’s top run-scorer with 391 runs at an average of 43.44, while youngster Nitish Kumar Reddy followed with 298 runs at 37.25.

In contrast, the Indian bowlers were impressive, helping the team stage comebacks on several occasions. Following the conclusion of the series, legendary Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh has singled out a player who made a difference for India. He even stated that without him, the team would have most likely lost the series 0-5.

Harbhajan Singh highlights Jasprit Bumrah’s impact for India in BGT 2024-25

Speaking on his YouTube channel after India’s defeat in Sydney, Harbhajan highlighted Jasprit Bumrah‘s impact in the series, stating that if he hadn’t been part of it, India would have likely lost 0-5 or 0-4.

Harbhajan said, “If Jasprit Bumrah wasn’t in this tour, the series would have ended 5-0. Jassi (Jasprit Bumrah) saved India in Perth. After Adelaide, he saved India in the rest of the matches. If he wasn’t in the series, India would have lost by either 5-0 or 4-0.

Bumrah finished the series as the highest wicket-taker with 32 wickets in nine innings at an average of 13. He is now the most successful Indian bowler in test cricket on Australian soil, surpassing Kapil Dev’s tally of 51 wickets, with a total of 64.
