The fourth BGT 2024-25 test will be played from December 26 at the MCG.

The Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 has so far lived up to the hype with the five-match series evenly poised at 1-1 after the three tests.

India won the first game of the series at Optus Stadium in Perth. Jasprit Bumrah led the charge with eight wickets while Virat Kohli and Yashasvi Jaiswal starred with centuries in the second innings. Travis Head was the only Australian batter who looked comfortable, scoring 89 runs in the second innings.

The hosts bounced back strongly in the pink ball test at the Adelaide Oval to extend their unbeaten record in day-night tests at the venue. The Aussies secured a 10-wicket win with Travis Head hammering a century in the first innings.

The third test at the Gabba ended in a draw due to frequent rain interruptions. Amid the bad weather, the hosts dominated India for the majority of the game.

As we move to the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) for the fourth test, let’s take a look at the records that Indian and Australian cricketers will aim at in the upcoming fixture.

Records which India and Australia cricketers will aim in 4th BGT 2024-25 test at the MCG:

1. Steve Smith – Needs 191 runs to complete 10,000 test runs

Should he score 191 runs in the fourth BGT 2024-25 test at the MCG, Steve Smith will become only the fourth Australian batsman to touch the 10,000 runs mark in test cricket. Currently, he sits with 9,809 runs at an average of 56.05.

Only three Australian batters – Ricky Ponting (13,378), Allan Border (11,174) and Steve Waugh (10,927) – have more test runs than Smith. He has so far hit 33 centuries and 41 half-centuries in test cricket.

2. Jasprit Bumrah – Needs 6 wickets to complete 200 test wickets

Jasprit Bumrah is leading the wickets chart in the ongoing BGT 2024-25, with 21 wickets so far. The Indian speedster stands on the verge of history with 194 test wickets to his name.

Bumrah will need six more wickets in Melbourne to complete 200 wickets in the longest format of the game. The Indian vice-captain recently broke Kapil Dev’s record to become the Indian bowler with most test wickets in Australia.

3. Nathan Lyon – Needs 5 wickets to go past Ravi Ashwin and become 7th highest test wicket-taker

Nicknamed “The GOAT,” Nathan Lyon needs five more wickets to go past Ravi Ashwin and become the seventh-highest wicket-taker in test cricket.

Lyon has so far taken 533 wickets in 132 tests. Despite playing a minor role in the series so far, Australia will have high hopes from the 37-year-old off-spinner in Melbourne.

4. Mohammed Siraj – Needs 7 wickets to complete 100 test wickets

Indian speedster Mohammed Siraj currently sits with 93 wickets in 63 innings in test cricket. Siraj has provided decent support to Bumrah in the series. He has taken 13 wickets in six innings and sits fourth in the wickets list.

If he takes seven wickets in Melbourne, he will become the ninth Indian fast bowler to pick up 100 wickets in the longest format of the game.

5. Shubman Gill – Needs 140 runs to complete 2000 test runs

Shubman Gill has failed to convert his starts into big scores in the ongoing series. For now, he would be eyeing the milestone of 2000 test runs, from which he is 140 runs away.

He could get to it in the upcoming game at the MCG. He averages 35.76 after 31 tests in his career.
