India have won more test matches than Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy history.

For almost the past three decades, India and Australia have been competing in test series for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT).

It is named after two of these countries’ greatest batsmen and former captains, Australia’s Allan Border and India’s Sunil Gavaskar.

The Border-Gavaskar Trophy is now seen at par with the historic Ashes series between Australia and England in terms of intensity, hype, and competitiveness. In fact, while Australia have been holding the Ashes since the 2017/18 series, they have failed to get their hands on the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in this period, which India have been holding since the 2017 series.

In BGT and Ashes series, the winner of the test series claims the trophy and if the series is drawn, the current holders of that trophy will retain it.

When did the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) start?

The first Border-Gavaskar Trophy series was played in 1996. It was a one-off test match in Delhi, which India won by seven wickets under Sachin Tendulkar’s captaincy, courtesy of a 152-run knock from opener Nayan Mongia in India’s first innings and nine wickets in the match for Anil Kumble.

What is the head-to-head record in Border-Gavaskar Trophy?

India have an edge over Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. In 56 BGT test matches, India have won 24 tests, Australia won 20 matches and 12 tests were drawn.

Who won the most Border-Gavaskar Trophy series?

Out of 16 BGT series so far, India have won 10, Australia won five, and one series was drawn.

India have won the last four BGT series, including twice on Australian soil. India are the only Asian side in history to win at least one test series in Australia, let alone two.

The first test series between Australia and independent India was played in 1947. Both teams have been touring each other regularly since then. Overall, out of the 107 tests between India and Australia, the Asian side has won 32 tests and lost 45, with 29 tests being drawn and one match ending in a tie.
