Nitish Kumar Reddy is India’s highest run scorer in the BGT 2024-25.

Nitish Kumar Reddy justified the brave selection call made by the Indian management to play an extra all-rounder in place of star batsman Shubman Gill with a sensational century. Playing just the fourth test of his career, Reddy absorbed immense pressure to reach his century in 172 balls.

Resuming their innings at 164/5, India lost Rishabh Pant early. Nitish joined Ravindra Jadeja at the crease with India struggling at 191/6. The two all-rounders put together a 30-run partnership before Jadeja fell to Nathan Lyon’s arm ball.

The biggest partnership for India in the first innings came through Washington Sundar (50) and Reddy. The young all-rounders combined to add 127 crucial runs (India’s second-highest partnership for the eighth-wicket in Australia), helping India surpass the 350-run mark and avoid the follow-on.

Sundar displayed patience and tired down the Australian attack, while Reddy took the aggressive route against Nathan Lyon and Mitchell Starc to keep the scoreboard ticking.

India will resume their innings tomorrow at 358/9, with Nitish Reddy on 105* and Mohammed Siraj on 2*. While Reddy’s innings has earned him praise on social media, the highest admiration has come from one of India’s all-time great, Sunil Gavaskar.

Expressing his admiration for the young Indian all-rounder, the former opener hailed Nitish’s maiden test century as one of the greatest in Indian cricket history.

The former India captain said, “This century by Nitish Kumar Reddy must rank as one of the greatest hundreds in the history of Indian cricket.

Sundar, who also played with Reddy in the IPL at SRH, said ,“I’m sure this will be remembered forever. One thing about Nitish is, no matter what he is doing, on the field off the field, he’s going to give his 120%. That’s his approach to life not just cricket. I saw him quite closely during the IPL as well. His work ethic and the things that he would do before every game, around games, was something very, very pleasing for all of us to watch and we knew something very special was going to come around the corner.”
