There are doubts over Jasprit Bumrah’s fitness ahead of the Gabba test.
The Indian cricket team might be left majorly worried in the intervening days between the second and third tests of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 as they fret over the fitness of their spearhead fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah.
Jasprit Bumrah and also Mohammed Siraj didn’t bowl in the training nets in Adelaide on Tuesday, four days away from the third test of the series at the Gabba in Brisbane.
While Siraj might have just been rested from bowling in the nets, there seems to be a worry with Bumrah. According to a report in the Sydney Morning Herald, Bumrah spent a lot of time with India’s strength and conditioning coach on Tuesday, away from the main group, which suggests there might be an underlying injury issue that could risk his participation in the Gabba test.
During his 20th over in Adelaide, Bumrah went down on the ground while clutching adductor muscle. While India’s fast bowling coach Morne Morkel shrugged it off as camps, the issue might be a bit more serious than that. More so, given Bumrah bowled at speeds at around 125 KPH in the only over he bowled in Australia’s second innings.
Is Jasprit Bumrah’s injury more serious than thought initially?
Former Australian fast bowler Damien Fleming reckons Bumrah’s issue in Adelaide was not just mere cramps but could be much worse than that and it could lead to his absence in the Gabba test.
Fleming told SEN Radio, “There’s got to be some serious doubts. There’s no way that’s cramp. He was very ginger after the break in the first innings. He bowled again, not quite as slow second innings. I don’t even know why he bowled that over [in the second innings]. That actually gave some secrets away to everyone.”
Meanwhile, Siraj was fined 20 per cent of his match fee for his altercation with Travis Head, which included a gesture signalling him to walk toward the dressing room. Both Siraj and Head have been handed one demerit point. At the end of the Adelaide test, the duo resolved their matter.
The third test is scheduled to kick off on December 14 in Brisbane.
