Josh Hazlewood bowled only one over on day 4 of the Gabba test.

Australia have been handed a huge blow in their bowling department as pacer Josh Hazlewood has been ruled out from the rest of the ongoing Gabba test and is likely to miss the last two tests of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25.

Australia were reduced to two specialist fast bowlers early on day 4 at the Gabba as Hazlewood walked off the field after bowling one over.

It was revealed that the lanky speedster suffered a calf strain during warm-ups ahead of play on the fourth day in Brisbane.

He entered the field late, having spent time talking with head coach Andrew McDonald and physio Nick Jones, before bowling one over in gingerly fashion and walking off.

Scott Boland to come in for Josh Hazlewood in the fourth test at the MCG

Cricket Australia confirmed in a statement that a calf injury has ruled Hazlewood out of the remainder of the Gabba test, where Australia are aiming to force a victory while battling with time and weather.

“Josh Hazlewood has sustained a right sided calf strain which will prevent him from playing any further part in Test match against India in Brisbane. He sustained the injury during the warm-up this morning and after bowling one over was unable to continue. He is likely to miss the remainder of the Test series. A squad replacement will be made in due course,” CA said in their statement.

This means that Scott Boland will return to the XI for the MCG test, where he has an excellent First-Class record. Boland played in Hazlewood’s absence in the second test in Adelaide and picked up 5/105 in the match. Hazlewood missed the Adelaide test due to a side strain.
