The last three tests between India and Australia at the SCG have ended in draws.

Australia have taken control of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25. The hosts currently lead the five-match series 2-1 after first four tests.

Starting the series with a 295-run victory in Perth, the Indian Cricket Team have completely lost the momentum after their defeats in Adelaide and Melbourne.

Batting has been a big concern for the visitors. The likes of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Rishabh Pant have been a constant let down for the side. Rohit has scored 31 runs in five innings, while Virat has registered 167 runs in seven innings which includes a second innings hundred at Perth.

Jasprit Bumrah has been India’s star performer, taking 30 wickets so far in the series. While Akash Deep and Mohammed Siraj have shown promise at times, they have struggled to match the same impact as the Indian vice-captain.

Nitish Kumar Reddy is another player who has shown promise in the series. After playing impactful knocks in Perth and Adelaide, Reddy hit his maiden test century in Melbourne, to lead India’s fightback.

As the action moves to Sydney, India will be hoping for a stronger batting performance to retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and keep their ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 final hopes alive.

India’s record in Sydney is not inspiring at all. In 13 tests, India have won only once at the SCG and lost five, while drawing seven.

On that note, let’s take a look at the last time India won a test match at the SCG, Sydney.

When was the last time India won a test match at the SCG, Sydney?

India’s only victory in a test match in Sydney came in January 1978 on their 1977/78 tour.

Fielding first, India bowled out Australia for just 131 runs, with Bhagwath Chandrasekhar starring with figures of 4/30.

In reply, Gundappa Viswanath’s 79-run knock guided India to 396/8d. He stitched a 125-run partnership with Dilip Vengsarkar (48), putting India in a strong position.

Facing a 265-run deficit, the hosts were bowled out for 263, handing India a victory by an innings and two runs. Erapalli Prasanna bagged a four-wicket haul.

The last three meetings between India and Australia at the SCG (2015, 2019, and 2021) all ended in draws.
