BGT 2024-25: MCG crowd shatters attendance record for a test match in Australia

Fans flocked to the MCG in large numbers throughout the five days of the BGT 2024-25 Boxing Day test.

The crowd at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in the fourth BGT 2024-25 test match broke the 87-year-old record not only for this ground but for any test match in Australia.

The Boxing Day test of the BGT 2024-25, hosted in Melbourne, was Cricket Australia’s (CA) showpiece event of the season.

It was an exciting event. The match started with the series nicely poised at 1-1. The test match delivered to its expectations as it was played competitively for all five days. Sam Konstas had a thunderous debut innings before Steve Smith rocked up his 34th test century.

Nitish Kumar Reddy and Jasprit Bumrah delivered punches for India with a century and a five-for respectively. The test match resumed on day 5 with all results possible.

More than 350,700 spectators attended the IND vs AUS MCG test 2024

By the start of day 5, it was confirmed that over 350,700 fans had attended this test match, breaking the Australian record of 350,534 fans, also made at this venue in the 1937 Ashes, when Sir Don Bradman captained Australia against England in a test match that was played over six days.

The crowds have been staggering for this test with with daily tallies of 87,242, 85,147, 83,073, 43,867 and 51,371* (more are expected to come in as the day goes on).

The MCG also saw record crowds in the T20 World Cup 2022: 90,293 fans attended the India vs Pakistan match and 82,507 attended the India vs Zimbabwe game.

Meanwhile, Australia set India a target of 340 runs after Jasprit Bumrah bowled Nathan Lyon in the second over of day 5. Australia pushed India back with the wickets of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul in the first session.
