Nitish Kumar Reddy slammed his maiden test century in his career’s fourth test match.

Nitish Kumar Reddy starred for India on day 3 of the fourth Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 test match in Melbourne with a sensational century that gave India a lifeline in the Boxing Day test.

In reply to Australia’s first innings score of 474, the visitors found themselves in big trouble at 221/7. They were bailed out by Reddy and Washington Sundar with their stand of 127 runs. The duo helped India avoid the follow-on, and with rain around, India could save the test match as well now.

This is Reddy’s debut test series and he’s currently India’s top-scorer, sitting behind only Travis Head in the runs chart. It is telling of Reddy’s temperament and skillset. Not to forget that he is only 21 years old.

Let us see the top five records that Reddy attained during his terrific century at the MCG.

Five records Nitish Kumar Reddy achieved with his century in MCG test:

1. First Indian to hit a test century in Australia from No. 8

The biggest record that Nitish Kumar Reddy created is that he became the first Indian batsman to notch up a test century in Australia while batting at No. 8. Reddy is also the first batsman to record at century while batting at No. 8 at the MCG. He is only the fifth batsman in the world to crack a test century in Australia while batting at No. 8.

Originally slotted at No. 7, Reddy had to bat at No. 8 as Akash Deep was sent as a nightwatchman on day 2.

2. Highest score by an Indian at No.8 or lower in tests in Australia

Reddy broke Anil Kumble’s record of the highest score by an Indian batsman in Australia in test cricket while batting at No. 8 or lower. Kumble scored 87 runs batting at this position in Adelaide in 2008. Now, Reddy, with his century, holds this record.

3. Third youngest Indian to score test hundred in Australia

At the age of 21 years and 216 days, Nitish Kumar Reddy became the third-youngest Indian batsman to register a test hundred in Australia. Only Sachin Tendulkar and Rishabh Pant are the Indian batsmen who made a test century in Australia at a younger age than Reddy.

Youngest at the time of maiden test century for India in Australia:

18y 256d – Sachin Tendulkar Sydney 199221y 92d – Rishabh Pant Sydney 201921y 216d – Nitish Reddy Melbourne 2024

4. Most sixes in a test series in Australia by an Indian batsman

Reddy has so far smashed eight sixes in the BGT 2024-25, which is the most an Indian batsman has hit in a test series in Australia.

Before Reddy, this record belonged to Virender Sehwag and Murali Vijay, who both hit six sixes each in the BGT 2003/04 and 2014/15 respectively.

5. Partnership record with Sundar for eighth wicket

Reddy and Sundar’s partnership of 127 runs is the second-highest partnership by India for the eighth wicket in Australia. They fell only two runs away from the record stand of 129 runs that was made by Sachin Tendulkar and Harbhajan Singh in 2008 in Sydney.
