Rohit Sharma made his test debut in 2013.

The fifth and final test of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 kicked off in Sydney on January 3rd.

India made two changes to their XI from Melbourne, with captain Rohit Sharma opting to “rest,” while Akash Deep was ruled out due to a back injury. Shubman Gill and Prasidh Krishna were brought in the side.

Rohit Sharma’s exclusion from the team made headlines, with many speculating that he was dropped – and not taken voluntary “rest” – due to his recent poor form, especially in what was a do-or-die game for India. Rohit has so far only made 31 runs in five innings in the BGT and has an average of 10.93 in his last eight tests.

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar shared his thoughts on Rohit’s future in test cricket.

We’ve probably seen Rohit Sharma for the last time in test cricket: Sunil Gavaskar

Speaking to Star Sports, legendary Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar said he feels Rohit Sharma may have played his career’s last test in Melbourne. He opined that for the next test series in England in June, the Indian selectors are likely to focus on players who can be a part of the team for the next World Test Championship (WTC) cycle, which will run until 2027.

Gavaskar said, “To me, it looks that the Melbourne test would be Rohit Sharma’s last game. The new cycle of the World Test Championship will start from the England series, so they will look to have somebody who will be available for 2027 final.

He added, “Whether India gets to the final or not is another matter, but I think that’s what the selection committee will do. Therefore maybe we’ve probably seen Rohit Sharma for the last time in test cricket.

Gavaskar noted that Ajit Agarkar, the chairman of the selection committee, likely played a key role in the decision to exclude Rohit from the final test of the series.

He concluded, “I believe the chairman of the selection committee, Ajit Agarar here in town, so he would have been part of the call that was taken. Maybe some of the senior players in the team would have been asked.”
