Shubman Gill made his test debut in the 2020/21 tour of Australia.
With less than a week to go for the first test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25, the Indian cricket team have received a big injury scare as young batsman Shubman Gill has been put in doubt for the Perth test due to a finger injury that he sustained on Saturday.
The first test of the series, to be hosted at Perth’s Optus Stadium, will kick off on November 22. This is the first time since the 1991/92 series that India and Australia will compete in a five-match test series.
India are the current holders of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy; they have won the last four test series against Australia, including twice on Australian soil. In the upcoming series, they will be aiming for a hat-trick of test series wins in Australia.
India also need a 4-0 result in their favor to qualify for the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 final without depending on other teams’ results.
However, even before the series gets underway, they might have to take the field in Perth without their No. 3 Shubman Gill.
Medical team to assess Shubman Gill’s injury status
Gill sustained a finger injury on Saturday while fielding during Team India’s match simulation, which is the match practice they have been doing among themselves and with the India A squad on the centre-pitch at the WACA stadium in Perth.
Times Of India reported that Gill hurt his finger while taking a catch during the match simulation. He is now in doubt for the Perth test and would likely return in the second test in Adelaide, starting December 6.
The BCCI or the team management has not made an official comment about Gill’s injury yet. The BCCI’s medical team will bee assessing him over the coming days and then make a final call.
